Did you ever think you'd live in a world were a Mad Max picture would be nominated for Best Picture? I heard it on the radio and thought it was a joke. God help me if it wins. WITNESS!

I don't watch award shows. Ever. Especially the Oscars, because 99% of the time, I've not seen the nominated movies/actors/etc. But hearing this, I took a look at the nominees, for this run. Holy E36 M3, I've seen quite a few of them! I think I might watch. Maybe.
Thank you. Possibly one of the worst movies of the year nominated for a stack of Oscars? What? But maybe it did qualify for some technical categories.
May you ride eternal, Shiny and Chrome.
It did look pretty, but the plot was a "turn your brain off and watch the women and explosions" kind of plot.

im having a hard time seeing your point...
I think the production values overshadowed the actual plot in Mad Max. Kinda cool to see something left field nominated for best picture..
I have mixed feelings about this. It calls into question what the phrase "best picture" means. Does it always have to mean angsty, sad or loaded with other human emotion? Does it have to have some greater meaning or message? Can it mean a great looking film filled with exquisitely crafted action sequences (even at the expense of plot or dialog)?
Also, there is no guarantee a good movie is made every single year, yet they will always pick one that was best. ;)
From honest movie posters.
I really wanted to love Mad Max, but just couldn't. It's a beautiful film and the chase scenes are impressive, but I was disappointed that there wasn't more "story". I won't go as far as to say that I expected some deep meaning plot in an action movie, but I did expect something a little more. The characters were just something to fling under vehicles.

It's certainly not a typical "Academy movie" so in that sense I'm glad to see it nominated. I personally enjoyed it, but in a traditional action movie sense, not in a "this movie is great" sense. I liked "Kingsman" and "Sicario" better myself, but then again, the Oscars aren't really aimed at me, so.......
I watched it, interesting cars, explosions, no plot whatsoever.... It was definitely a brainless movie.

I might have to redbox this if that is the case
Thank god some of you commented. I feel like I am the only person I know that didn't care for the movie. It was visually interesting but it's not something I would watch twice.
Most the time the Nominated movies are artsy, boring, or "chick-flicks". I'm glad to see an action movie nominated for categories other than technical/editing/score.
Should it actually win the award? Maybe not.
Only Award I'm rooting for is whatever Leo is nominated in.

Kingsman was a really enjoyable movie. Is Sicario worth watching?

You need to see Birdman from last year, and American Hustle from the year before.
Birdman may be artsy, but it's not a chick flick, and the way the film was put together was really cool.
American Hustle- that one was interesting.
This year, that one may be The Short, but I need to see that one. But your generalizations do fit Brooklyn and Room. Not so much the Martian or Bridge of Spies. Not likely the dark Revenant.
Fury Road got nominated for Best Picture and Straight Outta Compton didn't.
This is another excellent example of a number of things that I'm sure won't be a fun discussion so I'll just stop now.

My wife and I liked it a lot. It's pretty dark and gritty, it's about the drug war along the Mexican border and the moral lines that sometimes get crossed while fighting it.

which brain am I supposed to turn off?
My wife and I saw it when it came out and it was mostly just loud noises and a car chase. So my wife was interested in seeing the older ones and liked Road Warrior but the first one.....that was probably one of the weakest plots of all time. That first one is so hokey, I don't know how the other ones got made.
Titanic and Braveheart have both won best picture Oscars, those two alone are proof the whole concept is literally a circle jerk. Fury Road is positively fine art in comparison.

Go figure. The Brit doesn't like a movie about the English losing a war or a movie about a poorly-designed and poorly-captained English ship.
I liked the first two much better. Knightrider, Toecutter, Bubba & Johnny, even Humungus, they were a bad guys bad guy. And the cars of the first two were really good imo.
Thought Mad Max was ok. Would watch again, and have to appreciate the impressive action/stunts but I wouldnt go as far as to call it amazing overall.
Since someone brought up Birdman.....I guess that one is not for everyone. Maybe its just too deep a movie for me, but my wife and I thought it was pretty bad. A waste of $1 renting it from redbox. Is it supposed to be a metaphor (or true story?) for Michael Keaton's career?

You liked 'titanic'? Even the estrogen dominant members of my family thought is was a sorry pathetic plot lacking saccharine sweet excuse for a movie that would offend the sensibilities of 500lb afternoon TV watching sacks of blubber. The only bits of pain relief in the whole film was the (for the time) excellent CGI of the English designed and built ship was sinking
Braveheart makes that Fox news reporter claiming that the white house is advocated compulsory abortion look like a champion for truth and honesty. Date? let’s pull em out our arse, events? Let's pull those out of someone else’s arse. Portrayal of historical characters? Claiming GW Bush is a commie sympathizer would be closer to fact. Kilts?!?!? Give me a break, oh, and the best Scottish accent in the whole movie was by a guy who was meant to be Irish. Actually bringing this back to mad max, the original 79 movie may be closer to real life events somewhere that that movie.
Back to the Oscars themselves. While a lot of the time when people call racism I really think that it's an economic issue (People don't underfund predominantly black schools, they are underfunding poor areas where unfortunately minorities are over represented etc.) Even I think people have a point at the appalling lack of diversity in the Oscars.
