Not to take away from the achievement, but in 12 days you could walk as far as you could drive on that contraption, and probably burn less energy.

Judging by the first photo, it looks like he's the original Harold Thong!

Mythbusters tried replicating that a few years ago on their TV show. It was entertaining but they weren't able to actually get the thing to work for more than a few yards at a time.

Bring one to the GRM Challenge.

I bet the collective there could figure out a way to make it work.

The claim was that the car was damaged in an accident. What was so damaged on the original car that the same level of ingenuity could not get it moving?

I would guess suspension.. 2CVs have some odd suspensions. Making a bike out of the bits was probably pretty easy

From what Ive read, he didn't intended for it to take that long to build. So walking wouldn't have seemed like a good option. Once you're several days into something like that, you've invested to much time and energy to change your mind.

The other thing to remember is he was using the cars Shell as shelter. Something he wouldn't have had if he decided to just try and walk. Exposure probably would have killed him if he didn't have that car.

No doubt it was a risky strategy to try and cobble together a motorcycle from a car, and it very easily could have had a different outcome.

While carrying the water you'd need? That's the kicker.
