LOS ANGELES (AP) — Eric Lawson, who portrayed the rugged Marlboro man in cigarette ads during the late 1970s, has died. He was 72.
Lawson died Jan. 10 at his home in San Luis Obispo of respiratory failure due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, his wife, Susan Lawson said Sunday.
Lawson was an actor with bit parts on such TV shows as "Baretta" and "The Streets of San Francisco" when he was hired to appear in print Marlboro ads from 1978 to 1981. His other credits include "Charlie's Angels," ''Dynasty" and "Baywatch." His wife said injuries sustained on the set of a Western film ended his career in 1997.
A smoker since age 14, Lawson later appeared in an anti-smoking commercial that parodied the Marlboro man and an "Entertainment Tonight" segment to discuss the negative effects of smoking. Susan said her husband was proud of the interview, even though he was smoking at the time and continued the habit until he was diagnosed with COPD.
"He knew the cigarettes had a hold on him," she said. "He knew, yet he still couldn't stop."
A few actors and models who pitched Marlboro brand cigarettes have died of smoking-related diseases. They include David Millar, who died of emphysema in 1987, and David McLean, who died of lung cancer in 1995.
he knew what it was doing to him and he did it anyways.
it was his choice, and he made it..
also, as young and vibrant as someone that age looks today compared to 20 years ago, 72 is an age where you are lucky for every day that you wake up in the morning so it's not like he died at a young age or anything..
Hi Grtechguy,
Technically, he died of COPD rather than lung cancer but whatever.
It took me several aggressive attempts before I was finally done with smoking so I understand how challenging quitting can be.

Without a doubt. I've seen a huge surge in people using the vapes. One of the shops is a huge sponsor to the radio station.
I quit with the assistance of nicotine gum as e-cigarettes weren’t on the market at the time.
Now, we’re seeing a lot of blow back (aren't I clever) against e-cigarettes and I think it’s really unfortunate.
So wait? He just died? I've heard for years that he died from lung cancer years ago.
Scare tactics suck.
Edit: I just read the whole thing.
I believe there were many Marlbro Men.
With a serious look at legalizing marijuana in my state, there will be little talk of vapes.
In other news:
Cigarette manufactures still searching for the reason why people who are predisposed to have lung cancer are irresistibly drawn to smoke.

I remember seeing the movie Death in the West when I was in college. It was a documentary on the Marlboro Men.

Wasn't Tom Selleck a Marlboro man too?
EDIT:
Nope a Salem man.
Not all smokers will get lung cancer. They all will get COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, AKA "emphysema."

I do not understand that at all.

Watching friends and family members die of both, seems to me emphysema is a worse way to go.
Slowing asphyxiating?
Probably one of the more effective No Smoking commercials is the one of the guy sitting at his kitchen table trying to breath.

Choosing a highly addictive substance at age 14 in 1956 - when there were still a few physicians touting the benefits of smoking...not sure i'd go with informed consent on that decision. Also, median life expectancy for a white male these days is over 80. Conversely, men who are at age 75 now, can statistically expect to be around for another 11 years. So his grandkids missed a decade of stories - I'd bet as a hollywood actor/stuntman there were some pretty good ones. Too bad - OTOH, COPD sucks bad - at least he's done suffering.

The argument is that kids who wouldn’t have started smoking conventional cigarettes will start using e-cigarettes because they’re attracted to the high tech element and perceive the risks to be lower or even nonexistent. Later, they may transition to conventional cigarettes for whatever reason.
I’ve also heard detractors say that people that would have ceased using nicotine completely may stay on it with e-cigarettes again due to the perceived lower or even nonexistent risk.
Whatever, smoking is super bad ‘um-kay so the odds that the unintended consequences outweigh the benefits appear to be pretty low to me.
The weird thing I am hearing about the e-sigs is that they are trying to ban them for their second hand smoke!?!?

they should ban them because they make almost everyone that uses them into entitled douchebags that think everyone wants to see how freakin cool they look when they use them.

I used to work with one of the Marlboro Men many moons ago. He was from San Antonio and always wore a black cowboy hat. Non smoker, still alive last time I heard.

And I have to agree with you on this one. Another problem I noticed were people thinking that would help quit......well, they ended up going back to smoking normally sometimes heavier and it was cheaper.
I'll quit for good eventually......it'd be great if my life didn't throw E36 M3loads of stress upon me right after I do manage to quit.

I take offense to this. Ive been without a real cigarette for two weeks now and am using the e-cigarettes to do so. Ive been two packs a day every day for the last 15 years. Im working my way to completely quit. I actually have a sense of taste and smell for the first time in a decade.
