A friend of mine took his 525i wagon to 300k just doing normal maintenance. Of course, it had a negative blue book value at that point, so he just donated it.

The part that makes me the most queasy about the Aloha Airlines "Hey it turns out that pressurization cycles are just as important as flight hours" learning experience is how the pilots described the controls getting all loose because the cables were going slack. Because the airframe was drooping so much in the middle.

There was another incident in, I think, Alaska, in a smaller commercial jet, where a floor collapse caused the controls to seize up because bulkheads were jamming the cables.  They eventually regained enough control to successfully land the thing because the cables sawed through the bulkheads enough to allow them to move.  (Edit: Aleutian Airlines flight 8. Prop plane, not a jet. Propeller exited the plane, striking the belly on its way, causing rapid partial decompression, jamming the passenger floor that the cables ran through.  The pilots were not strong enough to move the controls, but the servos on the autopilot WERE, which did the sawing and clearancing, and ended up saving them)

I think Rob might be a wee bit more fastidious in his approach to maintenance than the average person. He had running driving British cars and motorcycles for most of his life, at the same time. Heck, he has a running Italian bike.

Also, the older, low power inline-six BMWs were pretty mechanically reliable. Just don't expect any of the switches or gizmos in the car to function. LOL

A negative blue book value? Is that where they pay you to keep from unleashing it on an unsuspecting public?

Really the interiors were the worst part but the 5ers held up better than the 3ers.

As long as he serviced the PCV system on a regular basis to prevent the neat trick they did where they would inhale all of the crankcase's contents in a few seconds, they ran forever.

My S60R has a BB value of $800.  I suspect I could get a wee bit more than that were I to sell it.

Some places automatically scrap any trade in over 200k miles.

I remember on Top Gear during the Clarkson-Hammond-May years they were talking about how you have to pay to scrap cars in the UK but then were flabbergasted to found out you get paid for scrap cars in the U.S.
