I stumbled onto a YouTube video recently where what appears to be highly credible individual believes to have found an unresolvable problem with at least some instinctive behaviors.
I was falling asleep and my interests are only tangentially related but he made a point that was compelling enough to get my attention...if I can find the video and it passes the sniff test, I may post something.

I had to use a 1 gallon version of one of these to fill my car the other day because I ran out of gas like a moron. Anyway, operating it was a pain in the butt. Combine it with the capless filler neck on the Ford and... the gas can got stuck in the car. I'd say at least 30% of the gallon made it in the tank though! The remaining was evenly divided between myself and the ground.

Sounds like you need to invest in a Ford She-Wee:
My last couple of Fords were capless. The PO of my Transit Connect lost the one that came with the van, so I had to buy a replacement. It's damn near impossible to use a gas can to fill these Fords up without the funnel. Oh, and buy a real Ford funnel, not a cheap Chinese copy on Amazon. It needs to be an exact shape to work with the capless system. The Ford part number is 8U5Z-17B068-B.
