US Army officer Peter Conover Hains. The first photo shows him as a Major General at his desk in April 1918, the second as a First Lieutenant in 1862. Hains was the only person to serve in both the American Civil War and World War I.

Years ago I had a Diesel VW Rabbit pickup aka a Caddy. They put down a thrilling 50hp at the front wheels on a good day. I got a call to go to my bosses house in Felton which was on the other side of the Santa Cruz mtns off Hwy 17. Now I could flog the thing pretty good but it was still pretty slow up the hill. I crested the summit and on the other side I saw the Fuzz aka The CHP with a radar gun pointed at me rolling about 25mph over the 50mph limit.
I immediately pulled over and when he walked up to the door said, "E36 M3, I've never pulled one of these over!"
Didn't make me feel any better but he did give me a substantial break when he wrote me for 5 over. Back then it was a 100 buck discount. In retrospect, he probably didn't want me to go to court and say I was driving a Diesel Rabbit and couldn't have possibly been going 75...
I have the same story but by the time he caught up to me I was struggling to make it up the next hill. He waved as he went past.
In reply to chandler :
"Eh, you're averaging the speed limit... you just keep on doing what you can"
Makes it annoying to drive in traffic with people with high powered bourgemobiles where they can set the cruise at 70 and not care about hills. Some of us had to hit 80 by the bottom of a hill to be still doing 60 at the crest of the next one. Pass and get passed all the way down to Columbus.
Lotta guys in New England on the old motorgeek forum, dedicated to fans of 5 cylinder Audis, usually of the turbo persuasion. One member mentioned using cruise control in his 5000tq and turned the cruise off when he noticed that he was running 10psi of boost to maintain speed up one particular hill. Oups.

I really like it when this thread has references to history. Bessie Coleman was an important pioneer in early aviation. She died in Jacksonville, Florida.
