Two weeks ago somebody was shot at the church behind our house. The church has been a constant noise issue since it moved in. I don't like them, but they have an "entertainment" permit that lets them be loud as all heck until 11 PM every night, even if my kids are trying to sleep.
A couple of days ago my neighbor surprised somebody breaking into his work van. Apparently they hit our house first and stole my wife's change out of her car (about $2.50) but they also took the tray part of the center console it was in- probably to carry more items they planned on stealing from the neighbors.
Just now there was a car creeping down the road with the lights off. I was coming in from grabbing something out of the chest freezer in the garage, so I hit them with the ultra-candlepower flashlight I was carrying and they sped off.
My neighborhood isn't that great, but there is no HOA and I really don't want to move. Our school is pretty dang good. However, if somebody else gets shot or people keep creeping and stealing, it's going to be time to go. Finding someplace that has a garage that I'm able to afford in a good school district is going to be next to impossible, though.
I think this is going to be a semi-long term plan. I'd like to get my finances in perfect order (no revolving debt, etc.) and save up a bit of extra money for all of the incidentals that come with buying a new house.
It's getting to be everywhere anymore.
Good luck
If you dont like sketchy, then avoid my area like the plague. Im in SE Raleigh off Rock Quarry and Auburn Knightdale. I swear the realtors planted people in the area when they were showing houses. I have not seen them since. Haha. The neighborhood was brand new and most of the homes started in the 180's - 210's. Then the bubble burst and the homes are ~150 and most of them are rented out or section 8.
I feel ya on the noise too. I was very surprised to see how many adults thump their systems at midnight. I would look towards Clayton or Morrisville and Cary/Apex is money grows on trees for you.

I'm sorry.....that has to be stressful
Is this one of those convenience store churches?
Think about forming a neighborhood watch group, it looks like there's information on your city website: http://www.raleighnc.gov/home/content/CommServices/Articles/NeighborhoodAssociation.html
I had similar problems when I first bought my house years ago - lots of noise and crime, the apartment across the alley was full of crack dealers, etc. The neighbors got organized and we started working with the police, and eventually got the place cleaned up. It took time and effort, but it was a lot better than letting things just go to hell.
I'm always surprised by how many criminals and thugs love Jesus . I 2nd the neighbourhood watch.

DA FUQ?
Procure PA speakers, play death metal until 11pm every night.
I used to live in Northeast Raleigh near Mini-City. I'm glad I don't live there anymore.
YUP! Movin time!!! Fwiw, I used city-data to find the least "diverse" county in Georgia, and moved there. Zero crime. Zero drama. Zero noise...other than barky berkeleying dogs, which follow me everywhere I go.

I wish that was the case where I live. My neighborhood is an older slightly unkempt one next to some high priced condos.. it is diverse in that the number of Hispanics equals the number of whites...
All the problems come from the whites.. and 99% of the problems come from the high priced condos across the street. I say 99% because my next door neighbors have this habit of arguing when I am trying to sleep
I'm planning on moving to some family property soon. Build a house out there. Only a few cars up and down the road.
May I bitch too?
I just got a citation for not having trash pickup.
The answer I would give upsets our love thy neighbor types.
I would not be on any Christmas card lists
A neighborhood watch was already being discussed, but unfortunately the "problem" area isn't in the neighborhood, exactly. It is a semi-industrial area my house backs up to. My neighbor is a musician, and the noise bothers him for the same reasons. He has threatened to use his equipment to play Highway To Hell on loop at the church, but instead just puts in a noise complaint at 11 PM like clockwork. I've done the same thing. They've gotten a few citations, but it hasn't stopped them so far.
When I bought the house 11 years ago I was single, no kids and didn't work where I work now. That's all different now. As I said, I think this is going to be a semi-long term plan. I want to find some property that will allow me to get business class internet so I can work from home with no HOA or other stupid covenants.
ScreamingE: I used to rent a house near Mini City in Hedingham. I didn't like it there, either, but mostly because the houses were built like crap. Cary is right out. Screw Cary. There is no way I could keep all of my hooptie rides in Cary these days. I am thinking of going a bit further west or south, since my office is in Chapel Hill.
Call the cops for everything even remotely illegal....
Someone driving down the street with no lights on? Call the cops and give a description of the vehicle.
Church being too loud, even before 11pm call the cops..
Possible crack dealer? Call the cops, or at least Crime Stoppers..
You see anything that looks in the least bit shady call the cops or Crime stoppers...
Don't let the criminals berkeley with your property value..
If the heat is on in your area.. The criminals will go elsewhere...
All doing nothing will do is make the problem worse (and force you to move)...
maybe you should check out the church service?

for not putting your trash out.. or not having it picked up? I know being single in an area where the township supplies a -huge- 50 gallon trashcan.. in the winter I can go a month without putting trash out.. Summer time, I have to do it weekly due to the smell
I lived in Clayton for a couple of years. Nice area, but far from your office. I don't have kids, so no idea about the schools.
Start calling city hall and demand to talk to the mayor about your issue. Call everyday until you get an answer or response that you can live with. That may be awhile though. Likely you will get one of his/her staff but dont fret, keep bltizing them with calls. Squeeky wheel gets the grease.

Unless you're in Toronto, then your mayor may be you loud drug user neighbor.

Yup - this is what I did. At first I felt like an shiny happy person complaining all the time, but if you don't fight for your home nothing will be done.
The skeevy rooming house next to me has been cleaned up and put on the market as a single family dwelling.
