Mobil1 - the hell?

I hit Pep Brothers tonight to pick up supplies for fall maintenance. I actually only change the oil on the DD cars about once a year, because we only put between 5k-7.5k on each of them in a year.

So I grab a dozen quarts of Mobil1 and a couple PurOlaters and head for the cashier, where she calmly asks me for about $90! I tell her there must be a mistake - Mobil1 is $3.99 a quart. She says sorry - it's $6.69! The regular crap is $3.99 a quart now. I left it and walked out. Same deal at Kmart next door.

So what the hell? Where are we buying decent oil these days? Wallyworld?

I buy wally world oil. I gots no money.

I usually buy by the case...sometimes it saves a few pennies, and I only buy when it is on sale. I stock up alot.

Wally-world sells Mobil1 for ~$23 for a 5qt. jug, that's the best deal I've found.

Agreed, WalMart has the lowest prices on oil around here. I'd buy it there but it takes me atleast 20 minutes to get out of the store... it's a SuperCenter, and they put the automotive section in the back corner.

Wally World does have the best prices on Mobil 1 in my area, but I dread having to shop there. The one in my town is an absolute cesspit and I refuse to shop at it, period. The next closest takes me 15 minutes to get to and is only slightly less pitty than the local store. Plus, getting any store in my area to accept used oil, even if I bought the new oil there, is a royal PITA.

Yeah, the price of oil has very quietly kept pace with the price of gas. I thought it was a mistake when I saw a sign outside a local O'Reilly's that advertized a quart of Quarker State for $2.99. I remember when oil on sale was less than a buck....but then, gas was A LOT cheaper, too.

Wal-mart is definitely the best place to buy oil. I also couldn't believe how expensive it is at auto parts stores. There's no reason for them to have it priced so high, I'm sure they would sell just as much as Wal-mart if they sold it for the same price.

The 5 quart jugs are up to $26 here. Yes, that is at Wal-Mart.

I buy my Mobil 1 at NAPA for what ever they are charging. I only do it a couple times a year but for the number of times they've answered a dumb question and not sold me an unneeded part or delivered a part they didn't have in stock so I didn't have to bike back in to town, buying my oil there is a small price to pay.

Been wondering when motor oil would catch up with the rising oil prices. Sounds like it has. I guess I really should have bought a hundred gallons a few months ago.

Its to the point where I go to the little local garage and have them do it.

Oil and Filter. for $12.

Considering my Aurora takes 7 quarts of oil, its cheaper to have someone else do it.

I put supertech oil and a supertech filter in the civic. Change every 5k. No issues so far. I figure with such a short interval(factory is 7500) the supertech can't hurt. and BITOG has OK reviews of supertech...

I wonder if you advertised used oil in Craig's List for free if a grease car guy would show up and take it off your hands?

I raced down there, They were Out of Stock of all filters for my 2.0 L Hyundia, After persisiting, they gave me K & K for the same deal.

Even the High Performance and High Milage oil. But supplies were running low..

I buy my Mobil1 at Wally World. The only car that gets it is the Esprit. All the other 4 wheeled vehicles in the fleet get Supertech Full Synthetic. All oil filters are now OEM Toyota since I found one that fits the Esprit.

Whenever a customer comes in and asks for a synthetic LOF, the parts guys always give us a full case of mobil 1. So every time I do one, i end up with an extra quart and half. Has saved me some money over time

I have Royal Purple in everything except the rotary so I didn't notice any price increase. I do use NAPA branded oil (made by Ashland/Valvoline) in the rotary and change it every 1000 miles (since it doesn't leave the driveway except to get raced...). CSK or NAPA usually have the best deal on oil, though Costco is coming around on Mobil 1 stuffs.

Given that I have a 55 gallon drum, and an oil-burning furnace, shouldn't I be able to burn at least the top 1/2 - 2/3 of the accumulated "used oil" (leaving the sludge, and saving the $3/gal for a little bit of heating oil)?

It's another kind of recycling - but not aware of anyone doing it. Would I be likely to damage my furnace?

Costco has a $9 off per case (6) sale running right now on Mobile 1. Limit 2.

i haven't used mobil 1 since getting rid of the integra GSR. at 3-5K intervals, all my rides get whatever firestone uses -- iirc it's a Kendall synthetic blend. the probe GT now has 202k miles on it, so i'm sure not hurting it any by not running M1.

except the V8 944. it gets shell rotella because it's got a flat-tappet cam.

Good questions. I'll troll my local CS and look for posts offering used motor oil. My family's house has an oil-burning furnace as well, but I have no idea if you can use motor oil in one without any problems.

As for returning the used oil, Mass. law states that the store that sold me the oil must take back the used stuff as long as it hasn't been mixed with something else, like antifreeze. I live on the MA/NH line and buy stuff in NH a lot (read my lips- no sales tax!), and I think the same rule applies there. Getting the stores to acknowledge this and take the used stuff, especially if the store doesn't have an auto center, is a whole other story.

Surprised so many of you support Walmart. As for using used motor oil in your furnace , yes it can/will cause problems with the burner. Our waste oil furnace at work works well, but the burner requires a complete rebuild yearly. Plenty of people are looking for used oil. We have an old oil truck used for storing the used oil during the year, come winter we fire it up and pump it right into the holding tank for the furnace.
