That sucks, sorry to hear about your car.

Ironically though, I'd bet that most large trucks have better visibility than a Miata with the top up. that is definitely true with my Miata and my Titan. Of course, you have to actually check your mirrors for them to do any good.

Yeah, the soft top on the Miata makes a huge blind spot. That little convex mirror that I have stuck on the driver's side (you can see in one of the pics) makes a huge difference.

This was a inattentive truck driver as well.

3 SUVs, 3 trucks, 5 dead including an entire family.

The tanker driver (right of image behind two burned SUVs) apparently entered a construction zone at speed and piled into the end of a line of stopped vehicles. I95 at the NC SC border was closed for 12 hours. http://counton2.com/2017/05/17/highway-patrol-ids-victims-in-fatal-i-95-multi-vehicle-collision/

It does suck when people don't pay attention. Hope you car is repairable.

What is it about driving a truck with a ladder rack or toolbed that can turn an ordinary, decent person into a complete jackwagon? Maybe its just SW Ohio, but work-truck drivers here are THE WORST!

Sorry about your car, but, any wreck you can walk away from...

I'll bet you can push a lot of the dents out by hand.

Depends on how much the paint is damaged.

In reply to 4cylndrfury:

As a guy who drives one of those work truck type vehicles, it's because the longer we spend getting from A job to B job, the longer we get to work that day. We tend to be impatient with the people that are meandering through their day at a less than urgent pace.

I spend anywhere from 1 to 7 hours a day on the road. Everyone that costs me .5-5 minutes is that much longer I get to spend in the truck, working. Over a 300+ mile day, it adds up. Some days it's 30-45 minutes of wasted time, because people aren't considerate of the drivers behind them. If they aren't in a hurry, you damn well better not be either.

Myrtle Beach is the worst, because everyone is on vacation. They don't care if you have places to go, people to see, and things to do. They are on vacation and you can damn well suck it at 10 under the speed limit.

Try getting out of their way and letting them get on down the road to the next job. They will greatly appreciate it.

I sure do.

Would have been totalled if a rear fender hit.

You really have to drive a Miata like it is an invisible motorcycle.

Sorry dude, that blows

It's not just a Miata or small car thing, though. I almost had some shiny happy person do the same exact thing to me the other day and my DD is a lifted XJ - pretty conspicuous. People just seem to suck worse and worse at driving as each day goes by, too much "important" stuff happening on SnapFace I guess.

As for the horn thing, I've had a series of several cars now with horns that cannot be easily found in a panic situation and I think I'm better for it. Rather than instinctively blare the horn, I'm instead focused 100% on evasive action, and the horn can be saved for letting them know they're an shiny happy person after the fact or for less dire situations.

I notice that the bottom of the window on more and more "midsize" trucks is higher than the roof of my (non-lowered) SW20 and even my (lowered) 4th-gen F-body. And yes, that means I constantly wonder if the driver can see me.

But it's not just a truck thing. Look at how high beltlines are getting on passenger cars to meet side impact requirements.

Even my Malibu is under the window on most new stock half tons. I've also been used to driving something that big in traffic and have never hit anyone in this manner. So I dunno.

I watched a guy in an F250 drive off the road hooked a tire on the curbing and then hit the end of a guard rail. He was only doing 30 mph or so. I laughed at him as I had been following for a couple miles and realized it was only a matter of time before something happened.

And the punchline - they're going to total it out. Shouldn't be too hard to retain and get back on the road in MA, since it's apparently old enough that it won't get a salvage title.

The initial valuation came back at $2500 and the damage was written up to about 2k, so now I get to play the "No, it's really worth more than that, for real" game with a car that's impossible to find comps for.

Thanks for those. The one on the forum is new to me - no hardtop on either, which adds a lot of value to the enthusiast, but not in the insurance software.

The one thing that I HATE about the NA Miata (been in it now for 4 days) is the horn button location. Why can't they put it in the middle of the wheel? Same complaint with my moms old Volvo.

I swapped mine for an NB wheel. So much nicer feeling, and the horn is in the middle.

This is more of a "Fix and keep forever" type situation. Way too much sentimental value in this one to consider letting insurance actually have it, especially for the money they're offering.

Un-smushed I think that 4-5k is reasonable. It has a ton of miles (230k) and some pre-existing cosmetic issues but the mechanical stuff is all very good and it's a rare color with an even more rare hardtop. I have a build thread around here somewhere that I gave up on due to general lack of interest (I mean, it's a Miata. Everything you can possibly do to a Miata has been documented to death online).

I paid 3k, and thought I was getting a good enough deal that I flew to NC for it.

EDIT found the Build Thread

Or I could be completely optimistic. Definitely open to hearing what others think it's worth. The CCC report thinks the hardtop only adds $56 of value, which is insane, in my opinion.

Find me a hardtop for 56 bucks and i will give him a hundred.
