Movers

I will probably never move my stuff again, and not because I'll be in the new house for the rest of my life. No, I'll probably never move my stuff again because for the first time in my life I have hired movers to do it for me. berkeleying awesome! In six hours they were able to pack and load the entire contents of my 3,000+ sqft house into the trailer -- except the beds -- and tomorrow morning they're coming for the beds, then taking it all to the new house and unloading it. Because the houses are only 4 miles apart, it's pretty much just a man-hours thing. When 9 guys showed up this AM i thought they were over-killing it, but they had 3 packing stuff, 3 hauling stuff from the house to the truck, and 3 arranging it inside the truck. assuming tomorrow takes 6 hours -- they're unloading but not unpacking -- the whole deal runs about $20 per man-hour. since i shattered my wrist the last time i moved my own stuff, i consider this money well spent.

Nice for you! It's worked for me too at one point, but there are a lot of horror stories, too. I think it's either "Yay look at how much work I don't have to do!" or "Holy crap they took all of my stuff!".

Whoa - I didn't know a new house was part of the move back. Congrats. And yeah - I suspect that it's a "once you go, you never go back". I'm really happy that I will be employed again by the time the first grass cutting of the year comes up. I wasn't looking forward to DIYing that after having a dude do it for me for the last couple of summers.

Movers are awesome. Totally beats doing the heavy lifting yourself.

They're great until they drop everything off in the wrong place and you discovered they used the fragile boxes to play kickball.

If I found a good one, that actually cares about their reputation, then I'd hire them. I don't have all that much stuff to require movers right now, though

we listed in jan, had 4 showings every day, and got two offers on the 6th day. so we were moving into a rental whether i found a job in MI or not. "the new house" is just a rental. we're going to watch the market for a while and see if we can get a short or foreclosure in the same general area for cheap. we sold for $27k less than we paid (bought in '04), so the total loss is around $50k considering new windows / skylights / etc. we should be able to make that up on our next purchase. and because of our down payment and additional principal payments, we'll leave closing with about $45k.

I must have missed soemthing Angry. Are you no longer working in Clover?

I haven't announced it yet for fear of jinxing something, but yes - I signed an offer letter on Friday and am starting my new job on Monday. I'm stoked.

Sucks to lose on the old house, but if you're able to parlay that into a cheaper purchase on the next one, then the net loss sort of disappears. So that's cool. Good luck finding the next place. And congrats on having the financial discipline to enable you to walk with cash even after taking a michigan level hit on the sell price.

It sure is nice when you are in an interview and the other guy says "we need to do a challenge car together". Makes you feel pretty dang good. None of my interviews have ever gone that well.
