I fully blame you Keith Tanner, for helping me find the weight I lost this year. Last year in I forget what thread, you put up your recipe for nanaimo bars, well I finally made them today. This tray isn't going to last very long at all.
So when I make them again for Xmas, I'm going peanut butter style.
Who is Nana Imo and why do her bars taste so good?

I didn't think Nanaimo bars made it south of the 49th, I learned something today.
I accept full responsibility.
And now I'm going to have to go make another batch.
Another gastronomic curiosity from ethnic Canuckistan?
Where the heck does one find "custard powder?"

You used to have to go to the special store that imported food from England. Now you can get it on Amazon of course:

They say you're not truly Canadian until you've had a ninaimo bar in a bar in Ninaimo.

That's interesting, it's been available up here in most supermarkets since I was a kid (and probably even before that). We always had a tin of Birds Custard Powder in the cupboard growing up. Though it was only used around Christmas for making Nanaimo Bars and the custard layer of the Trifle that was/is the staple Christmas desert for my family.

Custard powder is in the baking aisle at the grocery store.
Make your Nanaimo bars with semi-sweet chocolate so they're way better than the sicky-sweet diabeetus bars you find in the grocery store.

Most grocery stores in the US have never heard of it.

It would seem that the closest I might find around here would be called "pudding," but apparently custard contains eggs??

This particular recipe, which I borrowed from Keith In this thread , doesn't use custard powder. I am going to order some eventually because I want to try it that way.
I was thinking about pudding, and I don't think it would firm up enough to cut properly. The top layer of chocolate, at least mine, is rather solid and would squish all the pudding out.
For the record, I used 4oz semi sweet mini chips and 4oz 60% cacao Ghirardelli baking chocolate.
That recipe is from the Canadian Living cookbook, BTW.
Never heard of these before but they sound delicious!

Pudding and custard are definitely not the same thing. Depending on where you live you might find it in an "ethnic" aisle.
Traditional custard is made with eggs (beaten and then tempered into boiling milk), but custard powder uses other thickeners (corn starch mainly, I think).

Mint Nanaimo Bars are also a treat.

I'm not Canadian but I've managed this feat. Am I an honorary Canuck?

Hardest part for me was melting the chocolate for the top, my shoulder is messed up and stirring forever on the double boiler really does a number on it.
If you can make rice crispy treats, I'd say you can make these.

In my books you are!
Full disclosure , I did not complete this on my west coast trip a couple years back. So it's still on my list.
I'm sorry, did someone say "butter tart" in the video? Looks like I have two things to source this week...

How are you with drum brakes? If you wanted to head my way this weekend you could get some Nanaimo bars, but I'll be under the civic
