The "what to do in Austin, TX" thread got me thinking about something to heads-up The Hive on regional musicians/acts that we might try to catch if we get to unfamiliar cities. The Stevie Ray Vaughn comment made me think of Howard "Guitar" Luedtke who is well known in Wisconsin and the upper midwest.
Edit: Since everyone else is posting video, I thought I would, too. I apologize for the crappy video quality...
.....polka king of the Midwest?
I liked the Bottle Rockets when I was in college, but I don't think they are known that well outside of Missouri.

Didn't they break up some time ago...? I loved "Thousand Dollar Car"... :)
In reply to stroker :
Wouldn't surprise me, I think they formed in the early 90's. Used to crank the car stereo to Thousand Dollar Car and Radar Gun!
Steve Morse, founder of the Dixie Dregs and now with Deep Purple, lives here in Central Florida. I have heard that he sometimes plays little local places. I haven’t seen him locally, but my guitar teacher says that he‘s one of the best.

James McMurty recently got on my radar. Love his stuff. Sings about real people, real things.
Song that grabbed my attention:
Some songs that kept my attention:
Donnie Iris, nationally know most for Ah Leah! and his time with the Jaggerz and Wild Cherry, lives a few blocks over from me here in Beaver Falls PA. He had a lot more regional hits and still does occasional local shows.
Plus he's a really nice guy that loves his fans. It's not unusual to see him taking pics with people in Walmart or wherever.
My brother RJ is a pretty well-known blues and jazz drummer and bandleader in the Detroit area.
Carbon leaf, son's of bill, daycare swindlers, Keller Williams, Lucy Dacus, No BS brass band

They just started coming across my spotify the last month or so. I like the sound.
Locally, and I guess nationally after they had a song on the Simpson's, the Clark's are always a home town favorite. I was more a fan of the Buzzpoets but they never went national and their best album, alcohol abuse live, seems to have disappeared entirely.
Love Bettie was a really local emoish band, they moved to Nashville and started ghost writing country songs.

Choctaw bingo.
Hard to say who wrote it originally, but Ray put it out a few years before James did. But Ray has written a buttload of songs for other people through the years.

Best I can find is that Ray put it out in '05 on Delirium Tremelos and McMurty did it in '02 on Saint Mary In The Woods?
Every reference I've seen is that McMurty wrote it originally

I wasn't seeing mcmurty until an 09 album. Wiki says Ray covered it. My mistake. I always thought it was a Ray original. Still, the way country singers swap songs it's an easy mistake to make.
Living in Northern California, talented musicians are like leaves on the trees, but my favorite recent find was a group out of Sacramento called The Gold Souls. Funky soul and blues.

I think Cowboy Mouth is southern regional, but their concerts are life changing if you can catch one.
