So I caved and bought a fancy phone. A new iPhone5 should be showing up today.
So, what newfangled technology does this open up? I've never had a nice smartphone or used one beyond basic maps/internet/phone usage.
Anybody play with any track apps / linking to GoPro / racing games / general cool car related stuff?
I've heard of diagnostic plug in type apps as well.
Bluetooth-OBD2 interface, track data logging...I think you've pretty much figured out the car-related stuff, can't recommend any specific apps.
I see. guess I'll head for the Google...
cPro+ for all your Craigslist browsing
Dynolicious for estimating hp, cornering Gs, etc.
maxQData is kind of a lap timer
Torque calculator for conversions
iOBD2 for check engine light codes.
Various GPS based speedometer apps
I have one for spring rates but ill have to look it up
AAA Apps are decent, especially if you are a member.
Cannot find a decent vehicle maintenance reminder App though.
I don't know if Waze is available on the iphone, (probably is) but you could check it out.
There's also an app available for MegaSquirt, requires a serial to wifi adapter though.
There's some neat apps available for nut and bolt sizing, note taking, unit conversion.
Plus just taking pictures of stuff and/or researching it while you're out and about is helpful (especially at a salvage yard or parts store, etc)
Hit up the App Store from the phone or from Apple's website and search away. If the app isn't in the App Store, you can't get it on your phone (without jail breaking it, but that is another subject altogether)
Harry's Lap Timer Pro is pricey for an app ($25 or so) but an absolute bargain for what it can do. Pair it with an accessory 5hz (I think?) GPS and it gives dedicated data acquisition systems a run for their money. It records video, GPS data, lap times, accelerometer data (g-forces in both acceleration/braking and turning), etc. Totally awesome.
Edit: the reason for the accessory GPS is the higher resolution. It will work with the built-in GPS but doesn't work quite as well.

Awesome! Thanks for the suggestion.

Yeah, but doesn't it get the phone scaldingly hot? As in hot enough to put the phone in thermal shutdown?
I hadn't heard about the heat issue, but I had heard that in order to use the external, bluetooth GPS unit you had to jailbreak the phone's O/S. I don't know if that has changed with the recent iOS upgrades or not.
