i never thought i would have to type those words, but here we go.

i have to control 3 fans installed in my grocery store. the fans are industrial 5 speed, and came with a 5 speed controller. I fried one of the the original controllers by hooking up all three. i have searched and searched for a 5 speed controller rated for 5A or more.

here is my question. is the ac motor wound for only 5 speeds? i know on the pull type fans 'energize' a different winding to get the typical 3 speeds. my controller only has two wires, but 5 speed settings, so it has to change/modulate the voltage to vary the speed thru just a hot and common. right? also i noticed when they were hooked up to the 5 speed contoller that each fan was spinning at a slightly different speed?

so could i use a 3 or 4 speed contoller? i found these rated for 10A and up. like this one... grainger controller

here is the fan

here is the store over 180 types of beer dude...

any electricians out there?

I think you need to try to contact the maker. I know, you don't speak Chinese. Seriously, try to get some kind of factory tech help.

Just wire one, connect the rest with belts

If your fans only have two wires going to the motor, than the controller is simply dropping voltage to the motor and controlling speed that way. The controller is a variac in that case. So the Granger one you linked to would work.

Beware your start up current draws. That what kills most controllers. The Granger one likely will work, at least for a while. I'd be inclined to measure the start up draw before committing to that controller.

Wally's right: belts. Bonus ponts for leather.

If each one came with a five speed controller, it's rated to control only ONE motor. I would not expect that it could control all three--regarless of how it's wired. Also, how's your insurance going to be if there's a problem, and an unlicensed electrician, you, wired them in place.

Call the elecectrician. IMO
