Just got some bad news from one of our dorkiest (and I mean that in the most loving way). Dave Z., a.k.a. captdownshift, who as many of you know has battled cancer in the past, sent me the following message this morning:
"Thursday while in therapy I broke my humerus and ruptured my bicep tendon in a non-contact non-weight bearing stretch that simply consisted of placing my right hand into the small of my back. This means that it's spread to bone, and likely vertebrate before getting to the humerus. I'm between imaging scans and doctor's appointments now. I'm comfortable with the hive knowing, but don't know how to inform them, I know that they're an accepting and supportive group, but i feel...defeated. My body has betrayed me, letting down my friends, my work and amazing wife in the process."
I know we can't help the body, but this is an amazing group of supportive, smart people with crazy amounts of caring and life experience, so I'm hoping we can help with the rest.
Thanks,
Margie
You can beat this. Kick it's ass. We believe in you.

Please let him know: Anything we can do. ANYTHING.
I do not know what to say. Everything I can think of sounds like a sappy platitude or hollow encouragement.
You are in our thoughts.

News like this is somehow just as hard hearing from my online family as it is in real life.
Praying for healing and comfort.

I don't pray much, but just did. Good luck, my friend I've never met.
I believe in the power of the GRM board and I know you do too Capt!
We are harnessing that power for you.

Ooh, I like that thinking. I'm sure David will chime in himself when he's feeling more up to it. He did add this:
"Only thing I'd like to add is that I don't want others to allow my condition or state of health to define me. Even though I haven't driven since June and don't know if I ever will again, the wheels still turn on project and swap ideas, just without the resulting Craigslist and copart searches."
Which gets me thinking: Maybe we virtually build some kind of nightmarish but awesome fantasy project car? What do you guys think?

Seriously this. Also kick its ass for me please I am pulling for you.
I have spent my entire adult life trying to kill cancer for people that I never get to know as well as the excellent people here.
