Did you realize that was published October 22, 1988?

The gravel idea probably wouldn't work - you'd get less skaters and more thugs.

Now with the publicity, getting video of the offenses would be enough for the cops to put down the donuts and do something about it. A few peppersprayings and gun-showings would also put a damper on the hooliganism.

How about "Dog Pellets" (post consumer dog-food.....) frozen or fresh ? I guess you'd want a launch method that could employ a chaser "Round" for gun hygiene....

yeah, it's way old. I saw a TV show about these guys and this thread came to mind. Or vice versa...can't remember which. Either way, they did what they needed to do and walked. I was surprised as usually vigilantes are convicted for whatever crime they committed not matter how good their excuse..er...justification.

There's always the option of going MacGyver and replacing the lead shot with rock salt in your 12 ga. Yes really!

Rock salt was the non-deadly weapon load of choice back when I was a kid. IIRC you could even buy preloaded low power shotgun shells for just that purpose. Anybody who knows how to reload a shotgun shell can easily do it.

I never got peppered with it but my dad said he did when he was a kid and it stings like crazy. The worst part is it keeps on stinging for a few days.

i'm surprised no one went this route:

  • video tape hoodlums
  • call police
  • when police do nothing, call news people with story of police doing nothing.
  • repeat untill status quo changes

Good luck. There has been an ongoing problem near me, also related to Section 8 housing in an apartment complex. The owners have done nothing for years except increasing the percentage of Section 8 apartments from the original 15% to almost 90% now. Crime is so bad that the entire neighborhood surrounding it has started to collapse. No one wants to live near the complex, and the police blotter in the local paper has never not had an incident related to the building. The police had almost 1500 calls in one year to the same building. I don't know the actual numbers, but I am guessing that represents about 85% of all calls the police go on! There have been lots of calls for more police presence in the building, but there isnt enough money for the little boro to hire extra police just to babysit a bunch of morons. The building is now in foreclosure, and who knows what will happen next. The only way for the staus quo to change is to change the makeup of the people living there. And the same complain is always heard, even if you close the building, the criminals will just go somewhere else. For people living nearby, I am sure that is a fine solution!

Yup, but I would also follow the kids and find out where they live. Then I'd hand copies of the video tapes to the parents with the explanation that I'd like to help their kids to be better human beings. If that gets rebuffed (MY Jimmy doesn't do that, do you, Jimmy? No Mom, he's crazy. Etc.) Then I'll send all of that information to the police and the news media. If none of that changes anything then I'll ratchet it up from there until change occurs.

Then again, like many Oregonians apparently, I'm cravenly passive-aggressive so this all could become vapor ware when push comes to shove.

There are dirtballs everywhere. Its how they are "managed" that's the issue. As I stated early on, this is a police problem. If I were you pinchvalve, I would be on the horn to the police cheif, and the mayors office.

Around here a couple of the convenience stores took care of their loitering problem by playing classical music over outdoor speakers. The gangbangers couldn't STAND it and moved on.

similarly, i worked for a week as a loaner employee at an autozone in the uh, lower income part of town. the manager of the store would only allow country radio to be played in the store when he was there. everyone that worked there hated it (i didnt mind, i actually like real music). i did notice that when the hip-hop station was playing, the customers would hang out and chat with friends, joke around, etc. when the country was playing, folks would come in buy their stuff, and move along. i guess it made the place less of a hang out to them
