But why so high a price? I would pay more for his '69 Vette, since that's the year he actually went to the moon. In '67, he was just another face in the NASA portfolio....

As the listing points out, back in that time some Chevy dealer was giving all of them Vettes. I'd like to have one like that...without the history.

It says "delivered to", not purchased by. Rathman was a clever salesman to see how to bump the price up in the future.

Armstrong was not part of that group the right stuff was about the Mercury project not the Apollo one. The Mercury Seven were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton.

"Space" collectors are a weird, rabid bunch.
I was at Oshkosh a few years ago, and I learned that Joe Engle was going to be there. Engle was an X-15 pilot, backup on Apollo 17(I think) and was the only person to ever hand fly a re-entry in an orbiter on STS-2.
Was was waiting in line to talk with him and maybe get him to sign my logbook. I front of me was a twitchy dude who looked like he was in a hurry and did NOT want to be there. I started talking to him, and got the impression that he wasn't like the rest of us. "If it wasn't for him (Engle), I'd never come to this place.
Stunned, I looked around and thought, "You drove God knows how far to get one man's autograph? Look at all this cool stuff. You're not going to notice any of it, are you?"
What an ass.
Joe, however, was one of the finest gentlemen I've ever met. Here's a man who's flown over 150 different aircraft and he ends up looking though my logbook to see what I've flown. Very, very cool guy.
I remember an article in Hot Rod (or some other mag) back int he 80's where there was a picture of three astronauts standing next to their new '68 or '69 Corvettes. Might have been the Apollo 11 guys.
That's a neat barn find, for sure. I dunno what the PO was thinking putting flares on it, though.
OK--so it was Apollo 12
a) my memory is scary--this is something I haven't thought of in 25 years or so

They re-enacted that scene (the taking of the Corvette pictures) in the miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon" in the episode dealing with Apollo 12.
