Look what my horse did!
It's her first, she went a little bit early but the baby is perfect and healthy. What a good mom, she's so over-the-top protective and proud and worried all at once.
She's like a little Dresden figurine, so lovely and perfect. My mare, Colour, is parts bewildered, proud, nervous, worried and devoted – typical new mother. She really does NOT want anyone near that baby yet – she almost went after the vet!
She was about nine or ten hours old in these pictures! Yah, they have to get on their feet right away in order to get the first milk (colostrum). That's what helps establish their immune system.
That is cool!!
When I was around 7 or 8 my mom took me to see a horse being born in a nearby farm ... Not sure why you would take a small kid to see that, but I will never forget it. Within minutes or seconds that it was born, it stood up. Looking back, I am glad she took me and ai saw that ... It prepared me for the birth of my three kids, lol.
Unfortunately, I missed the birth as she chose to make her entrance at about 4 a.m. I've yet to see a horse being born!
I'd assume horses are close to cows in that department and I've seen that a few times. It's kinda unceremonious.
Yah, I've seen a calf come out... not that pretty, is it? It's a good thing human babies don't come out in a bag like that - can you imagine all those tabloid celebs with their "baby bumps" tearing that open and licking the baby off?
That is a beautiful filly. I have a dumb question, will she stay that color or will she get darker as she ages?.
