My 73-year-old mom is pretty picky about car seats, and she loves the ones in her new Flex. It also checks the boxes for upright seating, plenty of airbags, and decent mileage. Plus, the thing is built like a solid chunk of granite, it's dead quiet going down the road. If they don't mind a bigger, longer vehicle like that (and they can stomach the styling), they should check it out.
New Escape was mentioned up thread. Also try the new Lincoln MkC. We've had ours six weeks and about 5k miles now and love it. amazing mile eater. Been up North in it a couple of times and it's great on 4-5 hour trips. Smaller than the larger offerings like the Explorer, Flex, MkT etc but plenty of room for 5.

I say let them rent a car each time they take the 5 hour trip and that's a REAL test drive.
Seats are sometimes a personal thing. What fits one may be uncomfortable to another.
Something with the most adjustments. to some lumbar support is important, others not so much.
For me My Fiesta SE seats fit me fine. 4/5 hrs. is no problem if my bladder will allow it.

Dodge Charger.
I'd be all about them waiting for the Hellcat Charger to come out, so I could give it a try. ;-) My dad drives like Mr. Magoo, so it'd be no trouble for him. He rarely exceeds the speed limit. Mom, OTOH...would turn into the Little Old Lady from Pasadena.
Welp, mom ended up going with the Caddy. A fire-engine red XTS with tan leather seats. If there's one thing her and my dad love, it's a deal, and they got 10% of the car with some sort of GM discount, another 6k off due to it being a 2014 model, and 3k off from their GM card. The dealer didn't give them squat for the trade (a 2007 or 2008 buick, with over 100k miles) but I still think they rode out of there in a new Caddy in the high 20's.
Most importantly, mom's happy. Though I'm going to keep my eye out for Flex's in a few years when they start dipping down into Challenge money territory.
