IPhone 5s upper left corner, No SIM, Have not needed to make any phone calls but tried to call Verizon, "No SIM card installed" Who's toes get stomped on first thing Wednesday morning? Verizon bill gets paid way before due date or the IPhone store, both?
Had that issue with mine. Tried to replace the SIM, factory reset after a backup, etc. You might get lucky at that point.
Me? I had to replace the phone to fix it. Luckily I was able to sell it back to Apple (because it was a 64GB model) and get a 5S for nearly free (which was smaller because that was all they had as refurbs). Luckily I don't take that many pics and I enjoy the faster processor without having to go with a iPhone 6 and lose my tire tread case. :)
I had to take the phones in for the battery replacement they had back in the day anyway. Also, I rarely deal with the phone companies directly as Apple tends to understand customer care a bit better. That and its fun forcing all of their devices to update in the middle of the day :)
In my research, my issue was with either the SIM card slot or one of the chips on the main board. Someone good with a soldering station might be able to repair it, but that's a huge "if"
Verizon iPhones don't use SIM cards.

Since the launch on VZ's 4G LTE service, all VZ handsets have a Sim card.
VZ iPhone 4, 3G service only and no SIM.
VZ iPhone 5 & 6, which are 4G, all have a SIM.

I took the phone to the Verizon store and had it fixed, the saleman took the sim card out checked the phone over, sim card back in, test call worked. He said it might have been bad contact between the card and the board, no charge, all toes safe. Thanks turboswede and JohnRW1621. Fueled by Caffeine now we know1
My iPhone 5 does that occasionally, and it is a fairly well documented issue. Best solution is to do what the salesman did for you - turn the phone off, eject the SIM, reinsert it, and power the phone back on.
Wait until the volume down button on the side of the phone goes kaput (you have to enable assistive touch to turn the volume down), or the home button gets a mind of its own and randomly activates voice control (I had to disable Siri because this).
