I know there is a ton of stuff to do in the metro DC area but is there anything that is kind of out in the country and not in gridlock land?

My wife wants to do all this stuff in Fairfax but traffic in that area is miserable on a Sunday night at 9:00PM, not sure how I feel about that.

Hmm those are both about equidistant from our location in ffax county. The culpepper one seems like it might be choice for a wife and 5 month old. On the other hand bonfire sounds like shenanigans and massive private fireworks may ensue lol.

The best 4th of July fireworks I ever experienced was on the top of my brothers condo building (15ish stories) in SE DC. You could just turn around and see dozens of displays from DC, MD, and VA from about a mile away to 20 miles away. It was awesome. If you know anyone who lives in DC it might be worth a shot, or you can just find a tall condo and try to sneek up.

That was probably one of my best experiences as well. My brother and his wife lived in Madams Organ/Dupont Circle for years before becoming suburbanites. Going to the top of their building was very neat.

Probably too late now, but maybe next year...about 10 years ago, we took a riverboat (paddle wheel) out of Alexandria up and it anchored near the National Mall so we could see the fireworks. Had food, booze, and a band on the way up and back. If you live close to the Metro I think there was a stop within a few blocks of the docks in Alexandria. It was a really easy way to see the fireworks and not have to deal with traffic.
