Our tabby cat, Brutus passed away a couple months ago, he was a diabetic and was recently diagnosed with cancer.

We told some of our friends that we had an empty, cat-sized space in our house and we got a call to come get this girl today.

She's 5 years old and her owners are moving and can't take her with them. She's quite snuggly but is still getting used to our house.

Meet Parsnip:

She came to us with that name. She'll fit in just fine.

I look forward to the day my house is renovated and I can get a couple of cats. I miss my ex's cats more than her.

Looks just like my cat Logan aka Wolverine. Rescued him when he was barely weeks old back in 2005. He's still around.

Looks like the first cat Mrs. Duke and I got as a couple, almost 30 years ago now. We named her "Memphis". She was the cat that made Mrs. Duke like cats.

Congratulations!

Fine looking cat-unit, and a great name. Now get another one for l'il Parsnip, right away.

After Trixie (practically-human, only ever lived with us two humans for 17 years, never knew another cat) shuffled off last year, we tried 2 rescue cats on a trial basis. They were inseperable within a hour of getting them home, and they entertain each other constantly.

During the day when we're not home, or on vacation we're not thinking about them alone and pining for their people.

2 is a great number for the cats.

2 is essentially the same as one. Three is crazy, though.

Glad to see she's an adult! Everyone wants kittens but with an adult, you already know their personality. She's a beauty! Best of luck with her.

They're such a nice presence in the house.

Yes, thank you for getting adult. She looks a lot like my cat (all black cats look the same... racist?)

Two is a good number. Some cats do not deal well with being alone. Others do (how often someone is home I am sure is a factor). Having an age spread also is a good way to keep an older cat "young".

I generally agree on the "get two" theory, although my ex's two didn't get along well. She had the older male cat for a few years before adding a younger female. It was rare the two would share space together. Their totally different eating habits were a bit of a pain as well. She could have food left out for her and she would pick at it like cats typically do. He is more dog-like: all food within sight is consumed and putting out more food just means he eats until he gets sick (pukes) and then continues to eat. Whenever we'd go go vacation or leave for a few days, we'd have to lock her in a spare room with a big bowl of food and feed him on timer-feeder (that had to be modified as he figured out how to get more food out of it).

The contrast to that was my old bass player's two cats who were brother & sister (Boris and Natasha). Those two were pretty much inseparable. It was sad when the female passed on first as afterwards the male would occasionally roam around the house looking for her, quietly meowing.

Cute kitteh, and thanks to you for adopting an older, black cat.

We currently have three, an older male and two young females that are sisters. It took them a few months but now they're one big purry family. In general I'm a big advocate of counting cats like 0, 2, 3, 4...

Good on you for getting an adult cat. I've long been a fan of adopting them over kittens- the adults aren't as 'cute and cuddly' and have a harder time finding a home. When I have to say goodbye to either of mine, I'll certainly be adopting another adult cat to help fill out our family (hopefully one who is used to having a dog around, though it may not work the best with our ungainly giant puppy even with that...)

Thanks guys, we wanted an adult cat because my wife used to manage a pet store and we understand how hard it is to find a home for full grown kittys.

We have three other cats for Parsnip to play with, Monster, Hennesy and Phydeaux will be introduced to her soon.

my father prefers bombays.. he has a hard time adopting them as the local SPCA does not like to let them go. Too many people have done terrible things to black cats due to superstition

We have two (both black): Jet and Lucy. They mostly get along. At night after the lights go out, Lucy comes up and says "Dinner's ready" and Jet jumps off the bed and they both go eat.

Good for you adopting an older cat and having some other cats to keep her company. We usually have at least 3. These are the current group.

L-R: Sylvester, Luke and Tuffy. Sylvester will be 18 years old if he makes it to July. Tuffy is 20 months and Luke is 15 months old. We got Tuffy and Luke when Rascal and GreyBear died. They were both older than Sylvester and we felt lost with only one cat around.

Our cat of 10 years (one of the best cats we've ever had) got sick one day about two weeks ago. Wife took him to the vet, who took x rays and came out shaking his head side to side. They said he wasn't going to live, so we put him down. Two days later our youngest son called (he didn't know) saying they got a kitten to keep their little pup (one of those little dogs that looks like a mop) company, but they didn't get along. He wanted to know if we had room for it. It's been a good kitten. Nuts but not too nuts, loves people and has loads of personality. We're working on a name, but the only one that might stick is my second suggestion, Kid.
