Ground bursts throw irradiated material into the atmosphere, where it is spread by the wind. Air bursts don't, the irradiated material stays on the ground and doesn't spread.

Now where I grew up in Bayside of Virginia Beach, with Soviet ICBMs hitting the Norfolk naval base and Oceana NAS I would have been toast.

I used to live in southern Montana. There were enough Minuteman III silos in the area that we didn't have to worry about being survivors.

I was trying to figure out how to superimpose the impact from two (2) devices detonating nearby. Sort of like a Venn Diagram.

Am I on the right thread?

I grew up in the San Fransisco bay area. That place was a HUGE target back in the day.

  • Mare Island (nuke sub repair site)
  • Blue cube (Air Force recon satellite site)
  • Moffit field (base of west coast Orions anti-sub planes)
  • Alameda Naval Air station
  • Oakland docks (major container shipping site)
  • Lawrence Livermore Labs (lots of secret stuff)
  • Large population center, generally surrounded by mountains (!)

As noted, it was a good place to be in the event of a nuke war, big time vaporization.

OK, so if you're outside the Thermal Radiation radius (3rd degree burns) what happens then? How long have you got to hightail it out of town to find your cancerous flesh falling off in a few weeks’ time? And what about the same Q with multiple close, but not concentric blasts?

I'm not concerned about Russia, China, India or even Pakistan nuking us. If it happens it will be a terrorist group with a small dirty or the DPRK making a final splash. Most Likely Kim Jong-un selling a couple of their 10kt toys to ISIS or similar.

I always said that here in SE Mi we are safe as no Islamic terrorist group would attack the location of the largest Arab population outside the middle east (Dearborn). But even if they got pissed off at the Muslims who have sold out and moved to America to live with the devil and they decided to let off a 10kt device at the Dearborn HomeLand Security office, the third degree burn zone is still East of Southfield freeway so most of the Ford facilities are beyond that. At home I'm 15 miles from the 3rd degree burn zone. So how long do I have to pack up and head North?

In reply to Adrian_Thompson:

All depends on factors like distance from the impact site, device size and type, ground or air detonation, weather and wind direction and speed. You won't outrun the shockwave but depending on the factors above you could possibly avoid the fallout. If it happens to be raining it can cause the fallout to drop sooner than it might otherwise.

Here you go another one. This time a zombie virus spread map. The problem with this one though is it does not take into account things like air travel. However geography DOES play a factor.

I'm fine unless they drop a REALLY big berkeleying nuke on MSP central. I'm kind of surprised.

That an interesting look at population density. I placed a running zombie in LA and it spread across the west like wildfire, but once it ND it slowed wayyyy down. Good to know.
