At least in the Adirondacks.

It was just announced by the state but locals have been doing for some time.

This is mostly for water quality.

I ran on a test site on Rte. 365 or 8, forget which, in the deep woods last year

This is good news. I've read some news articles about the amount of salt being used in the northeast and Midwest, and the changes in salinity in surface waters.

Water quality is also a great reason!

I was wondering whether it was related to modern cars having mechanical reliability such that having them rust away in ten years is a bigger waste than when 120k miles meant everything on it was ready for a rebuild anyway.

They're talking about the same thing in Minnesota.

Thank god. Good lord, if there is a flake of snow in the air the trucks go by my house 3 or 4 times an hour. We get an inch of snow and they turn the road white with road salt. And then they had to do a study because they couldn't figure out why everything was dying off alongside the road. Gee, I wonder why.

you would think that all the salt going into the river or   pasture land would kill off a lot of wildlife and plants....

I guess not as they have been doing it for 50 plus years !

Its starting. Also, they only recently really went nuts with it. I forget the exact amounts, but the amount of salt they use has grown exponentially over years and they are up to 24 million tons a year. And it's not just wildlife, it beats the hell out of the infrastructure. Eats up the concrete and steel used in bridges and buildings. Tire technology has gotten better, more and more vehicles have AWD and higher ground clearance and ABS, and we keep hearing snowfall amounts are down, so why are we using way more salt?

I would love to see no salt on the roads and people use studded snows. All the vehicles up here are just destroyed by salt. If everyone ran actual snow tires (preferably studded) they could really cut back on salt with no issues.

Except for the people that have the salt contracts.

I’m old enough to remember when they just sanded the roads, it wasn’t uncommon for side roads to stay covered with hard snow / ice covered with sand for weeks until a thaw came.   Sand disappeared around here about 20 years ago going to straight salt and more recently the brine spray before storms and then salt as they plow.  There’s really no point in winter tires here anymore, the roads are bare and wet within an hour of the snow stopping.   You can watch it happen as we do our driveway cleanup, it’s actually sort of horrifying.

um no.  I see the heaps that get through inspection here now.. I could not imagine what I would see on the roads without inspections being mandatory.

As for salt, a couple of years ago they put out an advisory for people with high blood pressure not to drink the water, all the salt they were using on the streets was getting into the aquifers.

In reply to 11GTCS :

A lot of the townships still do that.

Back in the day the street/hill by my house was the local sledding venue.

Yes, this is the last year for my Blizzaks and I most likely go to an all-season tire.
