For old prog rockers: "Every Little Thing" - Yes > The Beatles
"Big Ten Inch" - Brian Setzer > Aerosmith < original artist
"Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" : Willie Nelson > Hank Williams Sr.
I'm stuck in the 90's for this one...
Dinosaur Jr's "Quicksand" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TWxNiJZFc4
David Bowie's original http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oP2SS8ggLtU
...and speaking of Quicksand, I'd dare say
Quicksand--"How Soon Is Now?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqsMY1PMGFU
vs.
The Smiths--"How Soon Is Now?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U5HpeA_WSo
Lush "Hey Hey Helen" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGsmvC3px6o

I really think he needs to do a cover of I'm So Excited
One exception: "Personal Jesus". His cover was good, but the original was already dark to begin with. Layering on the extra creepy didn't make it any more disturbing.

Disagree.
House of the Rising Sun The Doors > Pink Floyd > The Animals

Frijid Pink, not Pink Floyd.......... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t40INnb6DnY
The Doors, don't know about that one
Awesome thread, especially because nobody has to agree with anybody, but everybody is still right
Most of Bob Dylan has been bettered by someone else. The one that comes to MY mind is the Kruger Brothers version of "Don't Think Twice (Its alright)"
George Strait's "Seashores of Old Mexico" I like better than the Willie and Merle version.
I like Willie and Merle's version of "Pancho and Lefty" better than Townes' version.
John Prine's "City of New Orleans" is better than Steve Goodman's on Monday's and Friday's.
Me and Bobby McGee--Janis Joplin>Kris Kristoferson
Redneck Mother--Jerry Jeff>Ray Wylie Hubbard
Istanbul (Not Constantinopal)--They Might Be Giants>The Four Lads
Jeff Buckley, and others, version of "Hallelujah" is better than Leonard Cohens.
That is all I have for now

The original was from about 1880, so that one is hard to say. But Doc Watson's version is better than all.
"Walk, Don't Run" - California Guitar Trio > Ventures
"Pipeline" - California Guitar Trio > Ventures
"Sleepwalk" - California Guitar Trio > Santo & Johnny
"Classical Gas" - Vanessa Mae > Mason Williams
I did not know this was a cover.
