Check out my username. Got it? I had an '89 Chrysler Conquest TSi and swapped in a 351-W. Did a E36 M3 ton of work on the car over a few years of owning it. Long story short, I had to get rid of it before it was finished. Never drove the car. It's been gone since probably 2005. Been keeping tabs on it with the guy I gave it to. Yes, gave. Don't judge. It's passed into a few hands and still isn't finished. He told me the other day that I could get it back.

Now, the question is... Do I really want this thing back? It's my Elenor. It's my Unicorn. It was my first real car and my first real project. I'd love to get it back and running, but I'm not 100% on the idea yet. I need to see what the guy wants for it. If it's like $500+ for the car, then screw it. But if I can get it back for next to nothing, then I may have to do it.

What say you?

Go look and decide then and only after then. Romancistism(?) is still strong here....

I think you've answered your own question!

$500 for your favoritist project car? Come on, why not?

Is there a bigger reason no one has progressed it to a running state in 8 years?

i'd say you should get it back for the same price you let it go, unless there was significant progress made. I'd probably do it anyhow.

My first sports car was a TR4 - through circumstance I let it go when I didn't really want to. Always wished I had it back. Last year I bought another to plug that hole. Turns out I liked the idea of having it back better than actually having it. I'll finish it, because I'm not going to abandon a 2nd one. But I'm no longer in love with it and doubt I'll have it long - maybe just long enough to get it a log book and send it on its way - and pay for something I really want today rather than what I wanted 25 years ago.

Do you want it? And you can afford it? If yes, buy it. If no, don't.

Will you be finishing your project, or having to fix the work of several DPOs?

The first sounds rewarding, the latter sounds like hell.

Considering what people do to cars that adhere to the corresponding Haynes, I shudder to think what could happen to a one-off...

In reply to Conquest351: Do you have a plan to move the project to completion, or just looking to take it back because you can? If you are confident that you can bring it to completion, or even that you can move it past the obstacles that stopped your past attempt go for it! If not than you may be setting yourself up for another round of failure.

Just out of curiosity, was it time, or a technical setback that kept you from finishing it before?

I think if you don't get it back you should change your username.

Why pay anything? Has one of the owners added value?
My immediate thinking is, if you aren't sure you even want it, I don't know that you'd get it done. A project car is such a daunting task, and if there's no love....

What were the reasons you got rid of it and do they still apply?

Your "friend" is a dick for not giving the car back to you or at least offering to buy it back for you after making $$$ off it.

That said, it's your girl. Go get her back, finish her up, post pics, go do drunken power turns in your buddy's lawn, then sell it to me for pennies on the dollar.

Can you get it running inside a challenge budget? If so do it.

I'm apparently getting pix and more info on it. I already told them I'm not spending any real money on the car. Real money qualifies as more than $100. As I said, I gave it away with over $2500 worth of parts in it. Those were sold off by the 2nd guy who got it. Apparently it has interior in it now. I stripped that all out for the sake of adding lightness. I'll let y'all know more as I know it.

As for getting it finished, I think I can. Not a lot left, even when I got rid of it. Knowledge, tools, place to work on it, etc. kept me from finishing it. It was at a shop for a long time, but because I kept changing things, it really just got out of hand. I'd like to get it, get it running and driving, and then tackle small changes I want to make a little at a time. I think that's the most intelligent way of going about it.

Hopefully I'll get more info today.

I'll keep y'all posted.
