I've dabbled with great success in appliance repair before. I've already put a door latch in this Kitchenaid dishwasher. What it's doing now is running for a very long time with the "water heating" light on. The timer holds at 60 minutes remaining in the cycle, and it just runs and runs. the dishes get clean, and the water seems hot. Eventually (maybe an hour?) the timer continues and it finishes the cycle. I'm thinking maybe the water temperature sensor is bad? What say ye?
I'd assume the timer was hanging up, but I don't have one of those fancy, water heating, dishwashers.
You might try these guys. I've had real good luck dealing with them. They'll help you figure out what's wrong and then sell you the parts to fix it.

berkeley. I don't even know how to run the dishwasher. Hold on. Let me get my wife.

My Bosch did the same thing, turned out to be a burned pin on the board that kept the thermostat from being able to "sense" the water temperature. I resoldered (sp?) it and it has worked fine since then.

Anyone know if it is possible to turn a built-in dishwasher into a portable?

Sure! Set it on casters, maybe fab up some panels for the sides, wire it to a grounded plug, drop the drain hose in the sink and find a way to couple the fill line to your hot water faucet.
Can you turn off the heating portion and see if the timer works properly then? I'm sure mine has a button to shut that feature off. I'd certainly check thermostats/temp sensors..
Don't get me started on dishwashers. I recently bought a new one at the depot. It had a cracked tub. Depot wouldn't take it back because it was installed. Duh, how else would you know it was going to leak water all over and stain my hardwood kitchen floor. Manufacturer wouldn't just give me a new $500 dishwasher. Instead they made me wait 6 weeks before they could source the new tub and send a repairman out to remove everything off the old tub and install it on the new tub. Repair bill came to $918. Worst part was the repair guy got confused. I ended up doing most of the work while he sat, drank coffee and asked me questions while billing $168 an hour. I kid you not.
My answer for dishwasher is almost always $25 and craigslist. Actually, the last one was free for pickup. It's a mid 80s GE (with woodgrain option) and sounds like an unmuffled smallblock when running, but damn does it clean a dish....

Yeah, that's nuts!
I don't think used is an option. The wifey is so persnickety about stuff in the house. I'm thinking a $600. Bosch is the replacement answer, should I need to go that route.
But I digress. The panel allows selection of "Hi-temp scrub" or some such, and that option is off, as is the heated dry. It seems to think that the water temp is below some threshold for sanitary dishwashing, which I don't think is correct.
Hmmm... I wonder if I can locate the user's manual??

My dishwasher has problems with the springs/hinges.
When you open it, the door will hold itself level, until you roll out the dishes, then everything comes crashing down....
Those springs are held in place with little white Jesus clips that often fling themselves off.
Usually you can find the owners manual, and the service manual, online. A little googling will likely take you to them.
Since the unit isn't spitting out boiling water, I'd say it's actually not engaging the heating coils, and is simply giving up after waiting for the water to get hot.
@1988RedT2: Dishwashers are pretty simple, and if you open up the front panel you can sometimes find a way to put them in "self test" mode where they cycle each component and give you a light-blink as to whether the component worked.
If you do end up buying a new Bosch dishwasher, you will not be disappointed. Best kitchen appliance I've ever bought, and it was made in the US. Silent as can be, gets the dishes super clean. It's awesome.
