I just got in from seeing Youth Brigade and the Adolescents in a small club in DeLand, Florida. Max capacity was listed at 60.

Wow. Killer show.

I don't - and didn't - listen to punk, but I'm at least peripherally aware of it. A few years ago, my best friend introduced me to his girlfriend. I asked what kind of music she liked.

girl: "I listen to punk"
me: "OK. Black Flag....tell me, better with or without Henry Rollins?"

[I don't have an opinion on this; I was just trying to make conversation....I really only know him from his spoken word stuff and acting.]

girl: "Huh?"
me: "Sex pistols?"
girl: "Who?"
me: "You know, Johnny Rotten....Wait. Iggy Pop."
girl: "Huh?"

[At this point, the nature of the situation has dawned on me]

me: "Ah.....Green Day..."
girl: "Yeah! I love them!!"
me: "...Offspring, Sum 41..."
girl: "those are great bands!!"

What Punk means to me:

  • NoFx
  • Strung Out
  • Good Riddance
  • Less than Jake
  • ...

Pop punk turned me into a hard rock guy.

Minor Threat, Descendants, Vandals, Fifteen, Down By Law, Bad Religion, Bosstones....these were in my tape deck in the mid 90s

And be nice to Offspring...their early stuff was pretty good actually.

I went from The Replacements on the pop-punk side, through Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, and the Circle Jerks, to the Dead Kennedys. Never was a huge Pistols fan, but they were OK.

That's awesome, David. Personally, I'm hoping OFF! can steal enough grease to get the van to Atlanta at some point. It's cool to see the serious 80's punk bands touring.

In the interest of good taste and "family channel", I will leave you to find a link yourself.

This, with Pennywise, Millencolin, Less than Jake, The Bouncing Souls.... God, I think I was about 13 or 14 listening to this stuff.

X, Agent Orange, The Clash, The Jam were favorites back then. Ramones gets a nod for inventing the genre. Sex Pistols in small doses. Also liked Buzzcocks, Husker Du and Gang of Four.

Sweaty little cramped venues are the best kind to see a punk show in. Some place where the smoking rules are kinda lax and the floor is sticky with spilled beer.

She had to go

Simply because

And I let her go

Like she never was

'Cuz I didn't know

And I don't care what she does

She had to go 'cuz she didn't know who

Joe Strummer was

I know some of that stuff starts to approach the fringe of whats considered Punk, but still...

I saw Social D open for Metallica...most of the mullet heads were curious who the odd band on stage was. I got a lot of strange looks when I sang along lol
