I am informed from online searching that for the Outlook Web App you cannot change the mail announcement sound from the default.  This is a problem for me because I work next to the shop and and the soft bling that the announcement makes can be easily missed.

What if I change the name of the file I want to use to Windows Mail Announcement and change the name of the original file to something else?

So far as I can tell, your information regarding Outlook Web mail is correct, which is really odd, given all the time Microsoft spends on accessibility.

If you are using Firefox as your browser, there is an add-on that may accomplish this task - Notification Sound https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/notification-sound/

If you are using Chrome, the sound option seems to be embedded in the browser - https://www.killbillsbrowser.com/how-to-change-notification-sound-in-google-chrome-browser/

Yeah it's arguably a browser problem rather than an OWA problem - the only way it could be fixed by Microsoft within OWA would be to switch away from using browser notifications and play a sound from within the web app itself, which could come with its own problems, not being a real notification mechanism. I think using Firefox with the addon would be your best bet.
