Probably going to Gillette Stadium next weekend for an event that isn't football. Pretty sure I prefer flying into Providence since the airport and city are smaller, but wanted to confirm with locals. Google says the drive to Gillette is 10 minutes longer from Providence; pretty sure I don't care. Direct flight either way. Not too worried about cost difference unless it's enormous. I've never been to either airport.
What else should we do? Family trip with college age kids, one of whom is meeting us there, so two cars. We can arrive Friday or early Saturday, event is most of the day on Saturday, departing Sunday. Food? Sights? Experiences?
I’d do Providence every time if the flights are equal. I’ve done both and Providence is much smaller and easier to navigate. I disagree that it’s longer to drive from Logan to Foxboro than from Providence as well, there’s typically much less traffic coming up from Rhode Island than driving down from Boston even on a weekend. There’s been weekend shutdowns of one of the tunnels from East Boston (where the airport is) to downtown that adds a lot of extra volume to the newer I 90 tunnel under the harbor.
You have a pretty short window for enjoying the sights, Newport Rhode Island is nice and under an hour from Foxboro.

Definitely PVD. I live in RI about 5 miles from the airport and it's a great little airport. Depending on time of day, you might encounter a little traffic going through Providence on I-95, but it's always better than negotiating your way out of Logan. Have fun and enjoy your event!
When I lived in Hartford I flew out of PVD a bunch. Just cheaper.
For Gillette? I'd do Providence. It's an easy drive from there to Foxboro. If you were staying closer to Boston or in Boston, Logan would be better. Driving from Logan to Foxboro can be a real pain, no matter the day and time. On a map, it's a shorter distance, but the map doesn't know the hell that is the Southeast Expressway.
Also, Patriot Place has a bunch of stores, restaurants, etc right there. Too bad it's not summer, because they have a HUGE car show every Thursday at the Bass Pro Shop there. Also, it's on Route 1, and there's tons of stuff around there as well. I recommend Clyde's in Walpole if you're looking for really good food (BBQ-centric)if you want to venture out. Not too far from the stadium; love that place. I'd call ahead, though, as it's on the small side. The Red Wing Diner is also close to the stadium, and the food is great there as well.

For me it depends on whether both are non stop flights. If they are, PVD all day long.
I have to go to Andover from time to time and would rather fly into PVD if I have a little bit of time. Not closer, not less time, just way more a pleasant experience and I can go around Boston on my way north.
Thanks for the tips everyone! PVD it is. I'll check out the eatery recommendations as well.

Not a New Englander, but one of my more annoying travel experiences included PVD, and I should have used BOS instead.
The reason? Because there are only 3 flights a day from PVD to ORD, and 2 from PVD to MDW. At that time, there was only 1. My flight was canceled due to weather, and I couldn't get another flight for two days because everything was already overbooked.
I ended up taking the Amtrak to PHI and getting home that way. Had I flown out of BOS, I would have been on a flight in 6 hours instead of 48. There were other things at play, but I always look at the number of other flight options if it hits the fan. If everything else is close enough, I'll go to the airport with more options.
You'll want to go to SuperCharged by the stadium - it's a huge electric kart track.
