Having seen a light pole nearly slice a car in half when said car was doing 35 mph...........I would not be surprised to find out that the car was going no more than 50 mph. If it also turns out the car dumped it's power steering it's not to hard to envision the car doing a minor tank slapper clipping the curb then spinning across the road and impacting the pole. The two guys were club racers , pro series competitors and car nuts like everyone else here. Very sad indeed.

If 45 mph is true I dont think cars are supposed to burn like that. Well unless it is a pinto.

Is it me or is there a serious design flaw with a car that has the breakaway point of the rear subframe causing the gas tank to become exposed and or ruptured. I understand the principal of them wanting to have the motor separate from the passenger compartment. It disipates huge amounts of energy but if this designed separation causes the tank to rupture I think Porsche may have a problem here.

I smell lawsuit.

Just recently heard about the possibility of a fluid leak. The would definitly explain a sudden loss of grip even in a straight line if they were any bit of on the throttle.

If it weren't such a sad situation I would be able to appreciate the humor of seeing the E! Channel people try to talk about car stuff.

When F&F6 came out (which I still haven't seen, being stuck here in the Kush Mountains), it looked to me like they were aiming more at enthusiast when I saw that Mark I and a Jensen Intercepter. What 16 yr old ricer is even going to know what those are??

Anytime any person with even the smallest amount of notoriety gets killed, all of the idiots come out of the woodwork to litter the area where the person died with candles, pictures, and all kinds of other crap that someone else has to clean up. I could believe it spun into the tree at a legal speed and caught fire IF the PS system had a leak, because I'm beginning to realize that ATF is a lot like Napalm. Catches fire very easily, extremely hard to put out.

While not impossible for a good driver to drive past their limits, I doubt that the driver was past his limits. And I would be lying if I said I had never been in a corporate drive and been letting it loose a little.

News flash; The Carrera GT is now too dangerous for the roads.

Something we've got consider with super/hyper cars. They are billed as race cars for the street, but they don't have fire suppression nor do they have fuel cells. There are reason race cars have these features.

Makes me think I'd rather drive a race car on the street with too much protection than have a street car with none.

Some do have fuel cells, and I think more should (more cars in general too). Most are already very high-maintenance, having to change the bladder every 5 years wouldn't be so bad.

Yeah, it could be an extremely rare catastrophic PS system failure on a car that's maintained extremely carefully, causing it to spin at 45 mph into a solid object, shatter and burst into flame. Entirely possible.

But until we know more, I'm going with Occam's Razor. On what planet do two car junkies take a Carrera GT out for a cautious sunday drive around an industrial park? They were probably driving it fast enough that it was at least mildly interesting. I have zero experience with cars like that, but you're talking about a hypercar that hits 100 mph in something much less than 7 seconds. I'm guessing that what feels mildly interesting in a CGT is going to involve enough speed that unexpected things are going to happen really suddenly.

It sucks, and they didn't "deserve" it, but this just goes to show that all the skill in the world can't offset bad judgement.

Yeah, well, the reason we don't drive close to our limits on the street is that anything unexpected quickly puts us well over our limits. Everyone who has been to a track has seen some kind of catastrophic mechanical failure, even in that highly controlled environment. It's still your own damn fault if you're driving fast enough that the result of a PS blowout is a car that explodes into a million pieces of CF and burns to the ground.

That depends if you are around any semis......if so you're about as safe 2 up on a bike as a miata.

It's all relative, buddy.

I don't feel very safe in a big vehicle like a semi when I'm going down a twisty 13% grade.
