Likely that this would not have even been newsworthy had it not been for the recent disaster of the Francis Scott Key Bridge recently.

Bridges get hit all the time. Like Scotty said, now it is news worthy. 

For instance:

A United States Coast Guard (USCG) study of towing vessels and barge collisions with bridges located on the U.S. inland waterway system during the 10-year period from 1992 to 2001 revealed that there were 2,692 accidents with bridges.
