It is apparently NSFA (not safe for Aussies)
"The Australian prime minister, Julia Gillard, has called for an end to the internet phenomenon of "planking" after a man died when he fell from a seventh-floor balcony while having his picture taken.
"Planking entails people lying face down on their stomach in unusual locations and posting photographs of their act on social media websites. Gillard described the death of Acton Beale, 20, as "really tragic", and urged plankers to consider the safety implications of their pastime."

That would never work.
The phenomenon is another reason I loathe facebook. People obsessed with taking pics of themselves and posting them to FB now grow bored with that and have to take pics of themselves and post them to FB planking.
I know I'm crotchety here, but damn, be a bit more inspired, people. There is life outside of facebook.
I dinno, I think the absolute stupidity of it kinda makes it funny. I googled it and came up with a guy planking a tire- nothing special, but it amused me.

I tried liking this, but the button is missing.....

because lying face down on their backs would create such dull photos.

You mean like an internet car forum?
I used to give my wife a hardtime about Facebook until she said, "Why don't you explain how the car forums are so different from Facebook?"
"They.....well........uhhhh.........I got nothing"
I guess I'm a bit confused by all the FB hate, as we sit doing nearly the same thing.

I don't update my life on the forums a few times a day--only if it's car-related
I don't constantly post pictures of everything I do in my life to the forums. "Here are my kids, here are my kids, here are my kids..."
This is much more informational, whereas the overtone of FB is "look how awesome my life is".

My coworker suggested if they put a form up with some wet concrete and a pillow, I'd take a nap. I told him I don't need a pillow to take a nap, and I didn't fall asleep!
Planking is taking its' toll:

Unfortunately I have to agree with you on this one, Wood.
