My plumbing setup is the usual well water setup. Well pump, pressure tank, and water softener. So I'm in the shower and the water shuts off completely for like 2-3 seconds, then comes back on. After it comes back on the water tasted salty like ocean water and the soap won't lather up. I assume this is something happening with the softener, but I have zero knowledge of water softeners, so I don't know what to make of it. I woke up a little late this morning and had to leave for work without checking if the water was still abnormal. Does anybody have any thoughts on the matter? Is this a big problem or a normal function?

If your setup is like mine, check the softener tank. Could be out of salt, or a chunk could have worked its way into the lines.

The salt tank is about half full.

Are you sure it's not half empty?

No, it's twice as big as it needs to be.

My guess as a hobbyist well expert (damn houses), is that Revrico is correct.. You'll probably need to pull the head off of the filter media tank for the water softener, and you'll find something wedged up in there.

They're not that bad to deal with, I've rebuilt the valve bodies (head) before, it's pretty easy and any well supply place or even your local hardware store will probably have a rebuild kit with all the o-rings that you can replace "while you're in there."

Out of curiosity, was there a flash intermittent loss of power?

What kind of softener? Do NOT pull the valve off the softener tank, you will disrupt the gravel bed and foul the lower screen with resin.

What probably happened is your timer is off and you interrupted a regeneration cycle. Or you have a brine valve/injector issue witch caused too much brine to be used in a regeneration cycle. neither one are big issues.

Take a pic of the unit and there is a good chance I can walk you through it.

Thanks Ross

Wow, I knew I would get help here. My wife found the manual and I'm going to look through it tonight and see what I come up with.

I think it must have been regenerating when I was in the shower. The clock said 3:30 am and it was set to cycle at 2:00 am. That time frame fits when I had problems last night. I set the clock and will see how it acts over the next few days.

Nice. That works well. If you figure out what model or post a pic I can point you in the right direction. Best of luck! They are not rocket science, don't be intimidated...
