I know I had made a thread back in May-ish about running for local office but my google-fu is failing me.
Anyway, I have been doing my civic duty as an appointee since Nov 2017 and tonight I won the election to finish out the remainder of the 6-year term with 97.59% of the vote. (I ran unopposed and there were 9 write-ins)
I encourage you to look into your local offices and see if there is somewhere that you can make an actual difference. Over 90% of my local offices go unopposed.
I took a $500K annual budget, trimmed $350K of pork, and lowered the assessment rate for my district with the savings while still getting the capital projects done on time and budget. Not much in the grand scheme of things, but that assessment is my own property tax bill, too, so that $350K really meant a lot to me and my neighbors directly.
So go vote. Go run. Go make a difference.

Congratulations to the new grand-high-potentate and supreme dictator for life!
If you need any cronies or hangers-on, you know where to look.
This is really cool, congratulations man!
An acquaintance of mine was running for city council in the city we live in.. he lost by 5 votes! Local elections can be seriously close.

Congrats!
I have more than a few people wanting me to run for our city council, but the insane level of vitriol percolating around here by a very angry, very well organized small group of citizens put me off the idea. They just managed to wrestle control of half the city council by running on a message of "stop all change", which blows my mind. Our current progressive city council got us new sidewalks, repaved streets, crosswalks, new housing developments, and new businesses attracted to the city. That all stops come January 1st when the new council members are seated and begin their plan to dismantle everything the previous council started. Luckily enough projects are already in motion that we will still have a better city this time next year, but it pisses me off knowing half the council will stand there and smile for the opening day photos like they have a hand in making it happen.

Hasn't history told us they draining swamps is bad for the environment and water quality.

Yeah... I'm increasing the size of our detention structure (dam) to keep the swamp (wetland) where it's supposed to be.

Congrats! Is it possible to write a little about what you managed to trim out? $350k from a $500k budget is a LOT of 'pork'.

Most of the rules and laws you obey are local in origin. The people who make those rules are your friends and neighbors. So you can talk to them and explain your views.
Most positions have nothing to do with either political party. The sole exception is major cities. The top positions are party involved.
I spent $2 and signed up to be Mayor of my city. No experience, no selection, just me thinking I could do better. One of my neighbors paid for my advertisements another bought the yard signs. I made one 10 minute speech to the league of Women voters. And door knocked on Saturday.
