My brother bought a Corvette from Florida, because of the sun it had tinted windows also a tinted windshield.
Mike rolled up to a sobriety check point with 5 State Troop cars.  He was ticketed for the dark windows.  A Trooper was shot a few days ago at a routine stop, he didn't see it coming because of the dark tint.  State Commander told the troops to crack down on tint.  It's always been illegal but only recently that they started failing cars at the annual inspection because if it.

Talking to the Trooper, 3 cars back a guy did a U turn and bolted, two SUVs came to life, hit lights and caught right up to him.

Im not saying everyone with a tinted windshield is a jerk-ass, but 99% of the time when i see someone driving like a total jerk-ass, they have a blacked out windshield.

for a bit the thing was a lighter tint on the windshield, then the standard strip across the top windshield of darker tint to make it look "normal". Now its just straight up limo tint on the whole windshield.

I used to think like you, now I am considering tinting my windshield. Its too damn hot down here, or maybe I am turning into a jerk-ass lol.

From a function standpoint, i understand it for sunny days.  I now dislike tint since at night, any light inside from display/gauges whatever will project onto the tint at night and makes it super hard to see out.

Tinted windows have always been an NY traffic ticket, and it's been a failable item on state inspection for, oh, the past 7 years or so. Tint has to allow 30% of light through on side and rear windows, and the windshield can't have tint or a banner below the AS-1 line.

Could be an "and" function there, lol.

In Virginia, as I suspect elsewhere, there are legal maximums for tint.  It's pretty dark, and it's legal.  It may not be dark enough to keep a police officer from seeing inside your car, but isn't that kind of the point?

On the books, enforcement is relatively new at Inspection time.  As a motorcyclist I like to make eye contact with the driver winding up on the side street.

PSA is for very recent, State wide, "We're pissed" mode.

VA can suck on a big ole bag of diseased phalauses. KY doesn't care on tint for the most part across the state, but does have a tint law on the books no one enforces in KY. Cross the border into VA and they will stop you for the tint and write the ticket because your tint is illegal in YOUR state.... I avoid VA at all costs because of this.

Edit: TN really doesn't care either. And up until recently, MI doesn't either, they used to care.

What was the reason for stopping him? Illegal u-turn? I'm failing to see the justification.

Just bought a car from a cousin who lived In Tennessee and all the windows were tinted.

First night was spent removing the tint from the windshield.  The two front windows are next.

I would suspect it's suspicion of drunk driving by trying to avoid a sobriety check point.   They have been doing that for a long time, I suspect if it was unjustified someone would have figured that out by now.

They pull people over for weaving for suspicion of drunk driving.  Weaving within your lane is not illegal as far as I know.

IIRC the Supreme Court has specifically ruled that sobriety checkpoints have to be "voluntary" to avoid being an illegal search under the 4th amendment, and that avoiding one is not admissible as probable cause for anything.

My childhood best friend's brother was killed by a drunk driver so I'm no fan of those who can't get a ride - but I do suspect a good defense attorney could get that stop thrown out. It's not illegal to turn around.

If they took off lights flashing it's different than observing and subsequently stopping a car that commits an actual traffic offense.

There is fantastic optically clear uv tint that actually blocks more sun than dark tint available now and it's affordable.  About to do wifees windshield with it and then have then tint match the 40% oem tint on the front side windows to the rears.  Think it will be ~$150 out the door.

Neat!

I hate tinted windows. On the rare occasion it's too bright, shades. The rest of the time you can't put something on your head to see better through the tint...

What is the total putting-heat-in-the-car story by wavelength? How much of the car-heating is from UV compared to visible light? I guess any significant chunk of energy (chunk? Where's that in the particle/wave question?) kept out of the car is a win?

Nothing to add to the discussion, but the only time I recall being a part of a sobriety checkpoint, it was when my now-wife-then-girlfriend had come to pick me up after a night of drinking at a party next door to my apartment. She lived about 3 miles away. It was not the original plan, but the plan changed and I was effectively a booty call that night. She came to pick me up, it was about 2AM, she was in PJs appropriate for a 22 year old grad student, I was in... Clothes and reeking of alcohol.

Cop was visibly laughing when he peeked in the window. He had a pretty good idea of what was going on.

Holy cow. That was more than 12 years ago now.

I'm looking at UV tint for my driver window at least.  Driving east on 84 my forearm gets terribly burnt.  Been tossing a towel over it ....

I love the tints.  Absolutely love them.

Got my truck done 20% on the fronts, 20% over the factory tint on the back, and a 5% strip down to the bottom of the mirror on the windshield.  Keeps the heat out, makes it look slick, and keeps prying eyes from eyeballing the interior which is nice since I usually have a lot of tools in the back.

Modern tint is pretty damn good at not being a glare-fest at night.  Couple that with a decent backup camera and I couldnt tell you the last time I had to roll my windows down to see at night.

Yeah, I have 3M Crystalline on my wife's car and the e30. The e30 you can't tell its tinted.

Crystalline was not cheap though, so I would love to know the name of what you are going to use.

The Corvette front window's came tinted by a previous owner. They're legal, and have passed inspection twice. I have been stopped several times because no police officer in NY seems to know what's legal so it gives them a chance to fish for things when they're bored.
