Here is our fireplace:

Here is a close up:

The red underneath is what we are after.

Would sand blasting take that off? I realize the coating was probably applied before the brick was fired.

Also, the gold is going away too. Sand it and use fireplace black spray paint?

We also just switched over to natural gas and we need to switch this fireplace and the one in the garage over from LP to natural gas.

Anyone switch from LP to NatGas and have any tips? I feel like it should just be a orifice switch out but I am having a bit a hesitation.

We had a standard brick fireplace at our last house that was done in an early eighties pink brink with brass trim around the fire box opening. A SOS pad and high heat black paint fixed the brass trim. My wife dry brushed the brick with a deep red to dull down the pink. It really updated the look and it lasted for the ten years we lived there.

Because it's inside and you want it to look nice, see if you can get an estimate from a Mason.  My limited experience says acid wash, but free advice is worth every cent.

I also changed my natural gas BBQ to propane by silver soldering the orifice then redrilling it to the correct smaller size. Going the other way is a piece of cake. Use a drill index to find the existing orifice size then do the math.
