Will a 1999 Lincoln with deployed air bags pass? My nephew needs a car in Asheville and I found a decent beater but inspection may be a problem.

doubt it.

what kind of impact caused the bags to go off? The damage could be severe.

So you want to put your nephew in an unsafe car ? .

Hit a deer. Minor damage to the front end but the bags deployed. Air bags do not necessarily make a car "safer" IMHO, an attentive driver does. The seat belts still work.

I doubt it as well. Whether or not they make a vehicle safer is not relevant, for an inspection they need to working and not deployed. Could give your DMV a call and see what they say before buying it.

I started to answer you …then realized I didn't know what I would be talking about .. I'm not usually that quick

I'll back out gracefully and let someone answer that actually has something to do with the inspections process jump in here

The last car I put through NC inspection had no air bags. I took them out as the car was intended to be raced, but still street legal. Not one person that ever inspected the car cared about air bags. There is no way for an inspection facility to determine if your airbags are working or not. Now, if the steering wheel and/or dashboard have a big hole in them, I'm sure someone might question that. I also never thought I'd see the term "beater" ever applied to a Lincoln.

couldnt you go to the junkyard and get a new air bag for the steering wheel? then maybe get a good fitting dash mat that would cover the whole on the passenger side? just spitballin' here

Light is on in the dash, steering wheel is blown. The dash could probably be doctored. All this is adding cost for a kids car that may not last long. How hard to replace a steering wheel and reset the light?

When I took the bags out of the Manic Miata, I soldered the right size resistors into the harness. The car doesn't even know they're gone, so no airbag light. That's all that mattered in Delaware.
