My sister-in-law owns a steak house. They are changing it to a Sports Bar as we speak.
One of the changes is a new name. The old name was "T Bones", and has some negative issues associated with it (previous owner legacy- small town).
They've decided to change the name. Immediately.
Of course, they want something with the right vibe for a Sports Bar. Local flavor. And they'd also like it to be inviting to both women and men.
Its in the rural South. Outside Phenix City. Alabama. On highway 80. A little off the beaten path. Major SEC fans.
They considered "The Penalty Box". I told them that was stupid. They were literally writing the memes before they start ("I don't want to sit in the Penalty Box"). Plus that sounds like hockey. Nobody plays hockey here. And I pointed out to them that everyone in the penalty box tends to have a broken nose!
I suggested "The 80 Yard Line". (A reference to the highway it sits on). That's the current working name.
Any other ideas?
How about "the fifth quarter"? Of course the analogy breaks down with sports other than football...
I do like "The 80 yard line"
I used to frequent The Oar House when I was in university. Took me an embarrassingly long time to realize.
In reply to SV reX :
Penalty Box is a great name... for a hockey bar.
Ideas:
College football is life here, but there is a lot of division between teams. Area is equally divided between Alabama, GA, Auburn, with some FL State and LSU thrown in.
Phenix City is best known as a hub for organized crime. Prohibition led to crime, gambling, prostitution, etc. It's a better place now, but that's it's history. (Which doesn't lead to good names)
The unusual catch is my sister's desire to make it more female-friendly than a typical sports bar.
I think we'll avoid "The Oar House" ๐๐
I kinda like Overtime. It applies to a bunch of sports and it's fun to say "I'm going to Overtime!".
Looks like "my" Oar House shut down in 2018. They used to bring in the university marching band to play - in the bar, between all the tables - for the Superbowl halftime show. I think we played over Michael Jackson :) Mayhem. I remember a patron trying to pour beer down the sousaphone...

Have her look at The Sports Bra in Portland for ideas.
