Use that as motivation. He is an ass and wants to see you fail because he can't quit. And if you succeed then he has to realize the problem is him.

The smell post reminded me. I was a social smoker for a while after I quite and a horrible TDY smoker (I see the ship in the avatar, you know what I mean)

Lived on CO for the last assignment. THAT was it. one smoke with a beer and I had the worst hangover ever. Haven't wanted one since. But I moved here and the house wasn't ready, so I moved to an extended stay hotel for a while. The guy in that room before me must have smoked in his sleep. That place reeked even after 2 bottles of Febreeze. The wife came down when the room was ready. I hung the 5 shirts/coats I had in my room in our closet, my wife walked in and nearly choked. She dumped them in the washer and febreezed the closet.

I feel like an ass after smoking for so many years but god it smells. I have several young troops that smoke and it is hard to be on the jet with them, much less talk to them. I have just gotten hyper sensitive to it. I can't even go into a bar now. The smell is just awful. If I wanted one that smell would keep me from it.

I'm down to less than a pack a day, not smoking in the car (where I spend at least 90 minutes a day,) and no smoking inside (THANKS FOR THE ADVICE, SVREX!) Ordering the "e-smoke" thing this week to see if that helps, and grabbing nicotine gum stuff. I've also cut back on the drinks which helps immensely with the smokes.

I had to stop both alcohol and coffee when I dropped the smokes. Just couldn't do one without the other.

I've been able to re-introduce coffee, and several of you have probably witnessed me with a beer or few, but none of you have seen me with a smoke.

Keep going poopie!! (hmmm... I think the last time I said that was to my youngest when potty training! )

I quit cigars and pipe 5 years ago, and my last "bum a smoke" was over 2 years ago. I still fight cravings, mostly for a pipe.

^^ this! One day, one smoke at a time; you'll get through it. And your idiot FIL will give it up eventually. There's not much you do with the naysayers except to tell them to berkeley off! You'd rather be healthy the rest of your life.

I quit and every time i do I end up eating crap and gain about 15 pounds...but i'll join you to see how far I can go with it this time, made it about six months a couple of times...started while in the navy interestingly enough they gave you a "smoke break" if you smoked and you didn't get one if you didn't...seemed a no-brainer to me. and the navy also condoned alcoholism as a way of life...glad i kicked that ...i still drink occasionally but not like a dumbass and it's not habitual...But I am hopelessly addicted to Coca-Cola any tips on that?

not a one! Diet Coke and the odd Dr Pepper are my vices now...Dr. Hess says on his website that caffeine in general should be avoided, and he makes a lot of sense, but the same things that got me through quitting smoking, have only marginally well worked on the Diet softdrinks...I guess I just keep trying. One day at a time.

That's definitely the big krux. I'm pretty sure the triple-whammy would set me over the edge. Cutting back on the drinks has helped a lot though. There's definitely a correlation, and a fine line between "this is all I'm having tonight," and "AAAAaaahhh berkeley it! Who gives a E36 M3!"

Skeze:

Good chance you'll gain a few pounds. You've been substituting healthy eating for a toxic alternative oral fixation.

I gained about 20 lbs. when I quit.

However, the American Heart Association once compared the heart risk of smoking to being overweight. They found that 1 pack a day was the equivalent to carrying around an extra 50 lbs. With that math, I say take on the extra cargo.

However, I also eventually lost the weight without making any effort at all. Turns out, once you get past the habit of sticking something in your mouth that might not belong there, it's not that hard to get back to natural eating patterns.

Gives new meaning to "the world needs moar poopshovel!"

Still worth it.

Keep it up barnca and poopy!

Consistantly @ 1/2 pack/day (down from a little over a pack.) Though I have decided that when the Steelers are playing, how much I smoke/drink/eat doesn't count. Fortunately(?) I don't have a DD tomorrow, so 2 outta 3 will be kept to a minimum. I'll replace the drinks and smokes with copious amounts of kielbasa, brisket, and hot wings.

Thanks fer yer support.

You're on the down hill slide now. The only thing you have to resist is ever picking up another one. If you do, starting back is as natural as sex and almost as much fun. Stick with it and when you get the urge, slap yourself...hard. Keeping the brain occupied with other things helps a lot. Keep it up, because now that you've told up we will rag you mercilessly if you ever start back.

Yes, I know I'm a hypocrite.

Brag about quitting, then if you get the urge think about all the people that will be disappointed if you start again. Think about all the time you have invested so far to quit, would you really want to do that all over again? Those are things that have helped keep me smoke free for the last three years. Here is hoping you can stay off the cigs

I have a brother that has quit so many times its amazing.

IMO the biggest thing to watch out for is rationalizing. His line was "I have not needed a cigarette in 3 months, I am obviously over it.... So it is ok for me to have just one." Two days later, "I smoked a single cigarette 2 days ago, and have not had ANY cravings. I can obviously have another" "See, its easy for me to only smoke a little... and that is all I wanted. I like cigarettes, I just don't want to smoke all the time. I can obviously buy a pack and make it last a week"

Next day: "I gotta go get another pack of cigarettes"

And don't you dare let somebody else's jealousy stop ya..I thought you beat that after the whole thing at the in-laws' place!

If someone has to tell you that inhaling smoke directly into your lungs may or may not be bad for you, I have no use for you. That piece of knowledge should be obvious. By the way I'm a current 2 pack a day smoker for the last 15 years. I'm not trying to offend anyone, just voicing my thoughts. "FLAME ON"

I figure it has a lot to do with the fact that the tobacco industry knew they were selling a deadly product for many many years and lied about it or covered it up. Just like Johns Manville, WR Grace and National Gypsum et al did with asbestos. Hey lets pay a bunch of handsome movie stars to smoke on the big screen so everyone will want to be just like them. John Travolta seems to still be doing it. This even went on into the first Superman movie. Lets hire doctors to make ads in magazines and tell people that THIS brand of cigaratetes is actually good for your health. Every pack of cigarettes should say "use of this product will shorten your life".

I see no problem with them paying for it.

You can do it. Just remember that losing 10 or 20 or 30 extra pounds is far easier than growing new lungs.

My uncle passed away yesterday from his lungs shutting down. I hope you can kick the habit.

me too. even though i havent had a cigarette in 10+ years now i still occasionally smoke in my dreams.... and feel really guilty about it!

hardest part of quitting was being around other smokers doing things that i used to do when i smoked. so i started running a lot signed up for a 10K as incentive, and started eating better. avoided sitting at bars for hours with other smokers, and that got me over the hump. idefinitely got more done when i quit. all in all a good idea!

3 pak a day habit here .Kicked it in the butt 12yrs ago at 30 and never looked back. I will admit to cravings or actions once in a while like grabbing for the smokes. What surprised me the most was that some cigs repulse me now and others still stir up that old mental trigger of a craving. To me that proves they designed different brands to hook different personas. Keep up the good fight OP I noticed your wording seems to be more confident and positive in you last post. You got this beat

I have set my quit date as December 31st. I didn't use that date to be cliche it just happens to be the day I earn vacation for next year. I took off the first week of January to quit.

I smoke like a feign when at work but hardly smoke at home. I hope by being home all week watching Judge Judy it will help me get past those first few days worth of terrible cravings.

After that the battle will to re-learn my routine to eliminate those smoke triggers.
