...meaning r/c "quadcopters" capable of shooting and storing video. I see some of the really cheap ones now don't store it, but send it to your phone for storage.

That's not what I want. The video can be standard-definition, but I'd like it stored on an on-board SD card.

What is the least I can pay for a rig like this, and is there any brand that's better than others at the low end?

I bought a really cheap unit (40$) straight from China for Xmas. It was something I bought for the kids to play with. Can't remember the brand right now but I can check tonight if you want. Haven't tried video yet, but it flies OK. Mine has a slight inbalance in the four rotor meaning it very slowly drifts to one side when it's suppose to be stationnary. Battery life is great and it is easy to control.

My son has one that records 720p to an SD card. Think it was $24 on Amazon

very similar: Drone

Dromida kodo. Less than 60 bucks. Can handle a surprising amount of wind. The new generation is slightly bigger but still tiny

I got the same one. It has been cold and windy so I haven't played with it too much, but I was surprised how difficult it is to fly. And I used to fly RC planes. I cant get it to trip to the point of just hovering.

I have a larger one, a Syma X8, it will carry a go pro.... The on board camera is useless.

The only thing my 5 year old wanted for Christmas was a drone. We got him the same one Grtechguy has, $22 on Amazon, came with a 3mp camera and micro SD card. I'm still in shock at the technology available at that price. My boy flies it tethered to a jackstand, after an initial incident with a drone eating tree. I may or may not fly it in our living room, also tethered, after kid goes to sleep. There are toggles on the remote that can be used to "tune out" the drift, but they reset every time you turn off the remote, which is frustrating. Other than that, its more fun than a slab of beer.

We also bought a couple Syma 5c; it's pretty stable, has good control characteristics (once you set up the drift) and takes video. Honestly I've flown outside all of one times but we've flown them around the house and barn interweaving them. It's fun!

Battery life Kinda sucks but a package of ten batteries was $25 so you can charge them then swap them out and fly it for quite awhile.
