Sup.
I'd like to get my father a multitool for Christmas, and I've got no idea whats good and what isn't. He currently carries around a small Victorinox swiss army knife at all times. Im not sure if this is something he
s looking to replace that or something he only carries when doing projects and camping and stuff so Im not sure what size I
m looking for. A strong blade is important, and I think it should have a #2 Phillips screwdriver on it too. Other than that I don't know what else would be really handy.
I'm looking to spend about $50. Any suggestions?

A buddy of mine carries a gerber. Seems nice.....I like the way the handles lock open when you use the pliers.
I have a couple Gerber multitools that I keep in the glove boxes of my cars, they seem to be well made and useful tools.

Get a leatherman. They are made in the USA and are the original multitools.
SOG... Endorsed by the evil seargeant from Full Metal Jacket. Has gears so you have a mechanical advantage when Squeezing pliers. I've been through em all several times. The Sog also bolts together, so you can rebuild from broken ones. Ask me how I know.

Shucks. I knew I read something recently but "multitool" didn't come up with anything. Probably why the spellchecker keeps underlining it......

Me too! I thought it was the same thread when I saw the title. I think there was another one with even more pages recently. Wish I could be more helpful. I buy them. I lose them. I get one for xmas. I lose it.
FIL has an old Gerber, one of the early ones. He loves it. He's worked it hard for many years, and it hasn't failed yet. Something broke on it years ago, and he got it fixed. Maybe even fixed for free, though I can't recall. I've used it, and while not enamored of multi-tools in general, I can say that after several hours is cutting and twisting steel wire, my hands didn't hurt at all. There was no play in the pliers jaws.
Well, I just ordered a Leatherman Skeletool CX. Pretty sure he'll like it, I really like the interchangeable bit holder part. That, the light weight, the two carrying clips, and the one handed knife opening sold me on it.
Kinda want one for myself now.
I carry a Victorinox Swisstool. I have used the same one for 13 years
The thing is so heavily built I can use it as a sap if I needed to. Every tool locks into place and is accessible without having to open the tool. Also the edges are rounded over for a comfortable grip when using the pliers. It has been used in the guts of computers, in cars at the junk yards, worked hard on the ranch and on geology digs. I havn't had a single thing break on it and it has done everything I have asked it. Think I have a pic of it with my EDC stuff somewhere.

Good call. I've had one in my pocket since I got it for Christmas maybe 4 years ago.
I use my Army issued Gerber a lot. It's pretty sturdy and has held up to all sorts of abuse.
