Usually "camper shell" for the one approximately even with the top of the cab. Having camped out of one or two, I don't see the problem using that term.

I don't see the full-on campers often any more, but I have seen a couple of the mini-truck RV conversions in the past month or so, like this poor thing:

I had one of those. Terminal velocity was about 70mph, (mine had a 22r...it was an '84 IIRC) and that was with the help of gravity.

I can honesly say I took it from Columbia MO to Kansas City MO and "never lifted."

In British Columbia, I've never heard them called anything except a canopy. Except now I don't hear anything except can o'pee - dang you!

Useless?

Sometimes... For full-sized trucks I've seen them set-up as sleepers, being a bit wider than the cab, but still allowing use of the bed for a 5th wheel. But apparently they don't meet DOT requirements for a "sleeping berth" so they've become somewhat extinct. I looked for one pretty hard a couple of years ago and found nothing.

Topper in Wisconsin, once in a while you hear them called Caps or Truck/Bed Caps.

The flat ones are Tonneaus or Tonneau Covers.

Never seen one of the mini-camper shells until I moved to AZ, and they're called cowboy campers here.

I am from upstate NY and I always called it a cap if it had no windows, a camper if it had windows.

A quick search of the Raleigh Craigslist shows that the keywords associated with ads for these things are:

Cap

Camper

Shell

I want one of those in a bad kind of way for the dogs in my standard cab truck for the 3 times a year I need to take everyone.

I've always called 'em a "cap", and I'm pretty sure that's the term most often used here in the mid-Atlantic part of the country, which is really the only part of the country that matters.

PA its a cap
TX its a topper or camper shell
SoCal it was a camper

Where I grew up in PA, its a cap. A camper is a slide-in RV that goes in the bed of a truck.

Then again, I live in western PA... CL is full of Tonto covers, Cameros, and recently saw someone advertising a Taho cover for a Dakoto truck.
