What do you do to get rid of these things?
I've got a couple more hours of work and am looking forward to a weekend of fun and productivity. The inability to turn my head or do more than look for a position that doesn't hurt could put quite a dent in my plans...
Want it gone, NOW.

OK, this may sound weird, but I see a chiropractor. Find one that is not a quack, they are out there, they will get straightened out.
+1.
If they claim they can cure your aids with chiro, go elsewhere. But they are pretty good at getting bones and muscles untied.
I use a chiro on a regular basis. I have found that most of the time it's a muscle thing though. Adjustments will only help (if at all) temporarily. My last visit I stepped up for a massage before adjustment. All I can say is wow! Tissue work makes all the difference. Adjustments don't last long if the tight muscles pull it right back out of alignment.
Acute or chronic?
If it's something you woke up this morning, take a NSAID like Ibuprofin. It should feel better in a day or two. If it's something you've been putting up with for days or weeks or months, see a chiropractor.

Yeah. Best adjustment I ever had was while I was in Vegas for work. Woke up, couldn't move. Opened the phone book and went to the first guy who would see me immediately. I had had adjustments before, but this one started with a massage therapist spending about 10 minutes doing her thing before the doc came in. It was amazing. Once back home, I started looking for chiropractors with this setup, and have found none. :(
Massage Therapist, try to go see one every 1-2 months, I inevitably wait longer.
But it's always money well spent on a deep tissue massage. Yes, it hurts when its going on, but you feel better for quite awhile afterward.
Speaking of which, I need to schedule another appt.
When back and shoulders are tied in knots I do this.

It pretty simple and effective.
I see a chiropractor every day.
Thanks, everybody!
Four ibuprofen and a walk in the sun seems to have sent things a bit the right direction. As soon as I can stop working for that long I'm going to try the "static back" thing.
I'm going to see if I can't make an appointment to see a massage therapist soon. That's one I started to do regularly, but my last go-round was overpriced and under-effective. I wish I could just get regular massages from the last physical therapist I saw.
Fortunately, this isn't a chronic thing. I suspect it has something to do with the trials bicycle I picked up last Saturday...
Not ignoring the chiropractic suggestions; just going to start with the stuff that was already on my to-do list (and the quick get-me-through-today stuff, which is mercifully looking less dire).

E-cises are awesome. Pete Egosque has an excellent grasp on body structure.
After reading his book (Painfree) I forked over $1500 for 8 sessions with an Egoscue therapist years ago. I still use the static back position regularly.
If you can reach the spot this way it works great. Grab a clean tennis ball (a challenge in a house with three dogs) and put it between your back and the wall, or your neck and the wall and move slowly around, working your sore muscles with the ball. I have used this for shoulders and neck with great success.

You mean a medical doctor?
I suggest:
It erases more than just panties!
I have a problem with the muscles in my shoulder going into spasm rather easily. (think, just going tight enough to pinch a nerve and cause a lot of pain)
I have muscle relaxants and pain killers for it, but also have seen a physical therapist for it. Some excersizes when it starts getting bad and it can curb it.
Chiropractor +5000.
I have had a bad back since an injury in 1996. Sometimes leaning over a sink to wash my hands put me horizontal for three days. After a year of chiro care I can now live normally. I spent the majority of last Saturday doing incredibly punishing work (basically being a lumberjack - cutting, carrying, and splitting a large dump-truck's worth of firewood) and never had a single back issue.
Good chiropractic care is invaluable. Your spine is the body's nerve superhighway. If it ain't happy, ain't nothin' happy.

Glad I'm not the only one. I think my wife thinks I'm full of E36 M3 when I say it hurts to stand at the sink.
From my wife, the chiropractic physician, "Stretch slowly under a hot shower, using the soap to cross fiber massage. Rotate ice and heat in 10 minute intervals. If you can find a chiro that's great, but a massage at least would get you back in shape pretty quick in a pinch."
Bottom line, you probably need some adjustment work done, but that would get you feeling somewhat better without money or appointments! Good luck!
when I hurt my shoulder last year.. I went with the docs and all that.. and finally found relief with an accupuncturist.
He explained everything as he did it. Basically the idea of the needle is to get into the muscle and cause small amounts of localised bleeding. This brings fresh blood, oxygen, and gets the blood flowing into the wounded area.
It worked wonders for me.. especially since all the docs did was drug me and tell me to let it heal

Chiropractor and yoga. Seriously. I spend so much time sitting now I was starting to seize up. I'd get up from an 8-hour stint in front of the 'puter, or behind the wheel, and almost fall over from the pain. Yoga works out all the kinks – there's a stretch or exercise for just about anything that can get out of alignment or spasm.
