Just saw that Clem Burke of Blondie fame has passed.
F-U, cancer.
I was listening to Dreaming yesterday and I was thinking about how misunderstood they were at the time. I was just a kid, but because of the current musical atmosphere, everybody just dismissed them as another NYC disco group.
Nobody knew what Punk or New Wave was yet, but they helped define it.
Blondie was absolutely not disco.
I was just listening to Dreaming and Heart of Glass a few days ago, so sad to hear. RIP Clem, you were an amazing drummer.
They were punk, they were new wave, they were disco, they even help popularize an emerging sound called hip hop.
I have a folder on my computer called “Band pics.” It’s inspiration for my people photos.
A favorite from that file.
I've never been a huge Blondie fan, but I was definitely a huge Clem Burke fan. As a drummer myself, I had nothing but respect for him, and he was one helluva player behind the kit.
A while back, he participated in a study that proved something I personally championed: drumming for both mental clarity and acuity, and drumming as an excellent form of exercise. I try to play for an hour each week to clear my head, get my brain working better, and get one hell of a workout, and Clem Burke was one of the guys who proved to the world that those benefits were a real thing.
And for the record, eternally: F cancer.
My IG is currently awash with tributes and stories about Clem. Like, everyone knew him: Joan Jett, Dale Crower, Suzi Moon, John Barron, John Doe, CJ Ramone, Dave Klein and more.
From Laramie Dean, a friend of ours.
