Hef wasn't a cultural touchstone for my day (too young) but damn if he didn't live the life of a thousand men.  RIP.

He was, without question, one of the single most influential people of the twentieth century.

Thanks, Hef.

A full and long life, well lived.  Not many can claim to have done as much.

I wonder what percentage of the population can thank him for seeing their first image of a boob?  (raises hand)

I wonder if the Mansion will hit the market someday?  It was a great place and I really enjoyed my visits there.  I hope it gets preserved and enjoyed.

Many people have a life, but Hef truly lived.

He also owned a Pullman, which makes him extra classy in my book:

This was at Amelia Island Concours a few years ago. They had it parked next to a custom Pullman once used by...The Pope. The dichotomy was palpable.

It sold last year for $100 million. Hugh was allowed to keep living there for the rest of his life with a $1 million/year rent payment.

Fittingly, his body is to be hidden in a fort in the woods, to be found and passed around among 12yo boys.

Honestly, I think the articles and the social commentary generated by the magazine were his greatest accomplishment. There have been a lot of skin magazines over the years, but Playboy was different. It was intellectually engaging if you could read. Heff championed gay rights waaaaay before it was popular. He gave authors an audience that they wouldn't have had if they had submitted their work to mainstream magazines. And last but not least, during a time where sex and drugs consumed and destroyed the lives of many rich and famous people, he managed to live with just enough moderation that he made it to 91 years old.
