Man, I grew up listening to Hag throughout the '70s. I can still sing dozens of his songs. What an influence.

And Kris Kristofferson. And maybe Hank Jr.
Depends on what specific era and genre, but David Allen Coe, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Steve Earle, Jerry Jeff Walker are all still kicking if you're looking for the "originals" of the outlaw movement that might be included in there. And don't forget Jessi Colter either.
Then you have some fringe outlaw-ish players of the same era, i.e. Guy Clark, Don Williams, Jimmie Dale Gilmore.
I was planning on going out tonight to a bar to meet some friends. In honor of Merle, I'm going to break into the back door to enter.
Bummer
RIP Merle
toast a few tonight for sure, if I had a working turntable I'd get the 'ol LP's out
Glad I caught him in Folsom when I did, and now to prepare for the next talentless hack to replace this legend. Gonna be a whiskey night for sure.

I've got the same one. It's pretty good actually.
Nah, he aint dead.
See, he was tired of the Big City he was livin in. Mama tried to get him to Stay here and drink but The bottle let him down and in the end they had to Stop the world and let him off.
Last I heard he was Going where the lonely go to get some of that free bubble up, and maybe snag a bowl of Rainbow Stew.
I'm pretty sure that place has Swinging doors so maybe someone'll Sing him back home.
Here's to a legend.

We've never met, but I'm pretty sure we'd get along just fine if we did.

I was thinking the highway men, but now that I think of it, Merl wasn't a member
Pure Prairie League wrote a song about the first time they met him. His car had a flat tire and they helped him change it. I am on my phone so I can't link it. Look it up, it is great. "I'll change your flat tire, Merle" Don't let your sweet country picken fingers get all covered in earl!
