A nickname that could have been a put down became a badge of honor. She was the face of the arsenal of democracy.

It required strong, strong people to hold up the ones at the pointy end of the stick. Rosie delivered.

My grandmother was a "Rosie" but she was a welder. She built Hawker Hurricanes.

Wicked temper and a horrible cook, but I bet she could stack dimes with the best of them. laugh

When I started in 1977 there were quite a few women Machine Operators, a hold over from the Viet Nam era.

In the 1990s women were given priority placement for Machinist Apprentice slots, ran machines badly for a year or so, then got booted to an office gig for more money.

I understand and appreciate Rosie, but "the old boys' network" is alive and well in industry (unfortunately).

BTW, the twin rolled hairdo of Betty Grable etc of the 1940s  was to promote stylish safer industrial wear.

Great Grandma built C-54Es for Douglas at Orchard Field (O'Hare) in Park Ridge, Illinois.  I've been trying to find one so I can touch something GeeGee built.

I'd love to see a Hurricane that was made at "The Canada Car" where both of my grandparents worked (Grampa's lungs were berked since childhood). The closest so far was a calendar a coworker had with a pic of a flying Hurricane where the caption said it was built at The Canada Car Foundry in Fort William. I drive past the plant every day on the way to work too, but you can't tell it was ever an aircraft plant. Too many renovations and retoolings over the decades. It's been a light rail plant for Bombardier for a while now and they just sold the rail devision to Alstom (part of GE I think). Hopefully it stays running.
