I got an email from SCCA Texas region that Tommy Saunders passed away Wednesday morning while chaperoning his daughter and some of her friends on a spring break trip in Florida. While I knew his name, I did not know the man although I followed him around when he did the beginner walk through at some local autocrosses. Not much of a prayer, but my thoughts are with his family. No details were given, only that he had passed.

There is some thought that he may have suffered a stroke and then fell from a hotel balcony. Neither alcohol nor foul play is suspected.
He was a renowned SCCA solo competitor and a multi-time National Champion, maybe best known for his great personality and his accomplishments in this car:
JG posted something on our Facebook page, but it's worth repeating here:
JG Pasterjak Yeah. One of the first guys I remember meeting that i didn't already know from Florida. Your first Nationals is so intimidating, and in about two minutes he made me feel like I was just at another autocross, just by being super cool and welcoming.
