I'm back at my parents house to fix my miata that blew up on a trip to visit them. After getting the miata back together in order to get it out of the garage I needed to move my '89 turbo caravan.

I have not driven the van since 2010, I bought it in 2004, rebuilt the engine, swapped the trans to stick shift, converted to a DOHC, rebuilt (poorly it turns out) a holset turbo, built a sweet exhaust from scratch etc. etc. etc.

(camry long gone)

As my father is also a fan of the early caravans, we have amassed a collection of cool unique parts for this beast, including leather buckets, a convert-a-bed option, white snowflake alloys.

I have over the past few years decided I need to get rid of the van. The shell is very rusty and it still needs many bugs worked out. As I don't have a garage at my place, I can't fiddle at my leisure. I decided to pull all the sweet parts (engine, wiring harness, socketed ECM, high flow fuel pump etc.) and scrap the shell.

Long story short, the van fired right up (after charging the battery) and settled to a smooth idle. I instantly changed my mind about parting it out and wanted to keep it. It is soo damn cool. Then I noticed the smoke from the exhaust due most likely to my botched turbo rebuild. Then the engine started letting blue smoke out. Then the main oil pressure dropped to zero (probably a bad sender, as the head pressure was good). I tore up the lawn moving it with no power steering and a super heavy clutch.

It was the van's way of telling me it was time to part it out.

Thanks for letting me share, this is just one small place where people actually understand that you can have an emotional attachment to vehicles (even an '89 minivan!)

My sympathies. I had a 92 that looked a lot like that. I still miss it, even though it died saving us and taking a Camaro that was driven by a clueless moron down with it.

I've driven a 3-pedal 4-cylinder mid-80's Caravan. It was an interesting experience, but not one that I'd be eager to relive. The turbo might change my mind however.
